Default Turntable Help

First off, I'm a college student, meaning I'm short on both space and cash. I'd really like a nice turntable for playing records, but since the records themselves are somewhat pricey, I don't want to spend a ton of cash.
Since I'm on a budget, and definitely a layman when it comes to music enjoyment, I was considering a simple Crosley portable system, but the general internet consensus is that they're poor in quality. I don't need flawless sound quality, but tinny speakers or weird beat problems from a bad turntable would definitely bother me.
Can anyone recommend a good turntable/speaker combination that is generally inexpensive and fairly compact for a casual music listener?
