Speakers for a dorm room

Hey everyone, i'm new to this forum so if this is the wrong area please just let me know.

So as you can tell im looking for speakers for my dorm room in college, i want something loud for my ipod. I dont know much about speakers at all but i was looking at the Creative Inspire T12 Speakers from reviews they seem to be pretty good.

Basically i want to know whats the best speakers i can get for around $100.

after some more research i am now leaning towards Logitech Speaker System Z623

I know this isn't really the answer you're looking for - but in a dorm, even if you have your own room you'll still be living with other people, and other people will still have to be living with (or next to) you. Don't be that guy.

This is one of the best solutions -

Sennheiser HD280 - they sell for about $100, generally for music studio and production work which means great comfort and quality.

And if you think you need speakers to cover up sex sounds then stop dating obviously crazy / broken girls who can't do it relatively quietly. It'll save you lots of headaches down the road. :pimp:

Dave couldn't be more right about this. Headphones, price for price, will sound a hundred times better than speakers. This holds true well into the multiple THOUSANDS of pounds, regards audio equipment.

I'd recommend Grado SR60i headphones, or if you can stretch, SR80i. They're light, comfortable, and sound better than anything else on the market. You can't go wrong with a good pair of Grados. They're also very neutral, so they handle every style of music well.

And I'm not saying this because I haven't experienced a proper sound system. It actually isn't what I did. My system in my dorm room at university consisted of the following:

Denon Seperates Amplifier
Cambridge Audio DacMagic
Mordaunt Short Mezzo 2 speakers.

Thats roughly 1K of audio equipment that I used all day and night at university.

Did it sound good? Yes.

Was it convenient? No.

Did I need the volume? No. Not once did I ever need to push that system beyond "Listening level". I did, on occasion, but as Dave said, if you think you need to kick out the volume in a dorm, you're going to be "That Guy", the prick who won't turn his freaking stereo down because he wants to subject everyone else to his ****ty taste in music.

Don't be "That Guy"

The only reason I even wanted to keep that system around at university, was because I did a music degree and it was useful to have monitors for mixing.

Get headphones. Use them. You don't need a HiFi in a dorm room. take it from someone who had a HiFi in a dorm room.

Its actually my second year of college. i know my roommate and everyone in my hall actually so its already expected to hear loud music all day.

None of the above is untrue just because you know some other douchebags.

Having speakers just annoyed me in college. People liked the easy to like stuff...as soon as I popped on some black metal, I had on average 3 people stop and go "What is that??"

It annoyed the **** out of me. I naively thought that if people thought I had good taste in music, they might try to see the merits in EVERYTHING I was listening to. Didn't happen.

I have a pair of those Sennheisers Dave mentioned. I've had them for about 3 years now and they STILL blow my mind when I listen to them. I have earbuds for work, where I actually do the majority of my listening. I'll discover an awesome album there, and go home to my Sennheisers. It never fails to amaze me how much better a good album can sound on those suckers.

I also have those Sennheisers. They sound great and drown out my family's loud banter. :D

i dont need headphones i have sennheiser 448

GuitarBizarre 07-03-2012 04:18 PM

Then use those and save your £100 for something worth buying. Even if you really absolutely needed a stereo system at college and that was totally accepted and we all agreed with you, we'd still be telling you that all £100 stereo systems suck cock.

Because they do. Seriously. A system worth less than 2 or 3 hundred bones isn't even worth listening to, in hi-fi terms. And if your only concern is volume, not quality, then you're just doing music wrong period.

I just realized this is pretty much the new version of what I have on my desk right now. They're not bad, but nothing special. Good enough for playing random tv shows or youtube clips for whoever happens to be in the room but don't expect anything too fancy for movies or music listening. The sub can / will easily drown out the monitors.

lol at doing music wrong. Just like listening to music on laptop speakers should be a felony. Even though currently I am doing just that.

If the law worked the way I wanted it to, you'd be in exile already!

To be fair I bought the Hp Pavilion Dv7 soley because the speakers were better than any other laptop. And I hate to admit it im often places or in a situation where I cant use loud speakers and I dont feel like headphones. The sound quality is that of a small boombox. I have never heard another laptop sound half as good as this.

Dont get me wrong I plug into my Yamaha Reciever with bose bookshelfs and a Boston Accoustic Sub any chance I get.

First of all, sex with obviously crazy/broken girls is usually pretty fantastic, especially if they are making all kinds of noise, and second, if you're going to art school, you don't really have a lot of choice but to date crazy/broken girls. I think, if you play the right music, people will think all that noise is just part of the song. Try some Throbbing Gristle or Donna Summer. I know this is sort of off-topic, but hey, crazy girls need love too.

You sound like a well-adjusted human being with reasonable and life-affirming priorities.
