Turntable and Volume
 

So I bought an old turntable at the flea market for $10 bucks. It is a Fisher C-20, and it looks like it was removed from bigger system, (one of the cords is severed, but it isn't an important one). It has two working cords: the power cord and the cord with two RCA cables.

I wanted to hook it up to my surround sound, so I looked at the receiver for the surround sound, which isn't anything special, and noticed that there was no place designed for me plugging in my turntable. The only audio in jack was the one designed for an iPod or MP3 player. My RCA cables will not plug into that, so I used the audio input outlets for the TV/VCR on the surround sound to plug in the cables.

The sound comes through the speakers, but if I turn the volume all the way up I only get like a normal volume. I want to listen to my ISIS and Black Sabbath vinyls and have them destroy my eardrums. I know the problem isn't the surround sound because it works fine with my CDs. Google has led me to believe that what I need is either a preamp, or a needle. Hopefully, someone can clarify what I need because I really don't feel like spending a ton of money trying to find out.

You need a preamp/phono stage.

The cord that has been severed is a ground cable, you'll need to strip the end and ground it to something. The casing of the amp should have a terminal for that. Without it you'll get a lot of extra noise which will ruin your enjoyment.

Also, get a new needle AND a preamp, using a worn needle will damage your records.
