Can't Decide Between These Two Amps
I'm in the market for a high-ish end amp for recreational playing and am kinda stuck between a Marshall JCM2000 DSL401 or a Marshall Modern Vintage 2266C.
The tone on the MV 2266 is great but the thing that throws me off is that it only has 1 channel. I suppose a pedal board will sort this out though. I have a Gibson Les Paul Standard. Everything is standard on it atm but am hoping to upgrade the pick ups to SD Alnico Pro II Humbuckers shortly. I play a lot of different kind of music from GNR to Led Zep to Pink Floyd to Pantera and BLS. And a lot of other things. I'm looking for an amp that can handle all these genres with ease. My pedal board is going to be something like; (in no particular order atm) Wah Phaser Tuner ISP Decimator Overdrive Chorus Maybe volume pedal for swells. Possibly a Digitech Whammy 10 band EQ Anyone got any input? |

biggest question is exactly what do you plan on using the amp for recreational can be pretty vague.
are you filling the bar on Saturday nights and rocking it out until closing? or are you just trying to be heard over your friend's drum kit? or just practicing in your bedroom? etc. personally i'd lean towards the MV2266 but that's because i already have an old valvestate 40, which the DSL401 seems to be a souped up version of (AWESOME little amp for jamming with friends though) also, did you get your user name from Willow? |

Basically I'll be using the amp to jam with friends and bedroom playing but I want to have the choice of playing gigs too. |

NICE! Willow is by far my favourite medieval fantasy movie.
as for the requirements for small gigs, if the venue has a PA either would be fine. if not, you'll probably want the one with two speakers. one thing i found was more or less necessary with my V40 was to place it up off the ground, at least up to chest height so that the sound came through clearly above the bass and drums when jamming with friends. just putting it on a chair or stool would suffice. |

Or go out and get an old 50wt JCM 800, if you have the bones. The 2x12 can play a club, and it cleans up nice when you roll off the volume.
