Depends on your needs - you could just go for a classic Soundblaster Audigy, they are quite cheap now

According to the needs of a recording musician, a Soundblaster Audigy will not fulfill.

Hi!
I'm using the tascam US-144, it's really good with a low latency and a very low noise-level! And there are also two faders for the inputs, XLR- and Klinke input and faders for the monitoring! My tascam was also inclusive a piano-plug-in and Cubase LE 4, very useful! The price is only about 160 $!

Scissorman, I bought a Tascam US-1641 because it has a USB cable (which would work well for a laptop) and has many inputs...enough for a full drumset...and cost less than $300. I haven't had any problems with it so far, though I haven't had much chance to use it for recording due to time constraints.

The Tascam US-1641 is also attractive, with a midnight blue front panel. Sometimes I fondle my audio interface and think, "Pretty, pretty."
In addition, it has a functional flat shape. When I'm not using it, I put a lamp and telephone on it. Let's see other audio interfaces do that! Like Schmidti's US-144, the US-1641 also came with Cubase LE 4.

I may be able to proxy an mbox/mbox mini/whatever with my 40% digidesign discount for someone if they're (very) nice to me, not 100% sure how it works at the moment though, I'll find out.

I have the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra, has pretty much every input you would want from a card, been stable for over 2 years too.

I was going to say M-Audio myself, had the Delta 10/10 for a good few years and it only set me back just over a ton, £100 for all the non-Brits :p
