First time live performers
 

My friends and I want to play a song at our school talent show - specifically a Coldplay song. I have been in music a while, but I don't really know much about playing live. The auditorium we would play in seats about 300 or so, and we want to play and have our sound really mean something. We don't want it to be just a flat sounding song that everyone is like "blah". We want sound that will make people sit up a little. So after those poetic lines, does anyone have any suggestions to what we need for amplifiers and such? We will have an acoustic/electric guitar, an electric guitar, a bass and a drum set. There will be one singer. So what will we need/what would work for us? Any advice?

find out what the school auditorium has for a PA setup then rent anything else you need for the day. they must have some sort of sound system for a room that size that's already capable of handling your band.

besides, whether or not people are like *bleh* when you're done playing has far less to do with the gear you use and far more to do with the energy and enthusiasm you perform with.

yea ask the talent show coordinator person if you can test out their PA system, then just have a friend listen in the back row as you play a few notes.

My suggestion for playing live would be to do something original... thats #1 and number to if it has to be a cover dont expect ppl to go crazy over coldplay

idk, isnt coldplay pretty popular with people who aren't very musically informed (the majority of the school's population)?

Yes, But it's still not exactly crowd lively music.

Coldplay's too slow.
Pick something faster, more lively. It's not going to cheer up the crowd and make them keep on wanting to hear you necesarilly. Also, most of their songs are 5-7 minutes long.

Play them some cheap, fast, easy to listen to ska music....done well, you can't fail.

Play something that you like ... You know that little buzz you get when you hear songs you like.. Now we are on the same page...

Someone played that Red Jumpsuit Apparatus song, Face Down. It was pretty good, though I hate that song. So, like, pick something lively or something R&B. That's what a lot of people chose for the Talent Show, and it was beastly. A lot of stage presence is needed for those songs, it's so soulful.

The OP guy is one of those annoying people who come here, open a thread and never post again, so we'll never know how his high school debut worked out.

At least he prompted an interesting question; what single song would you chose? I agree that Coldplay isn't the way to go. I'd chose something that's instantly accessible fun, but with cool musical credentials. Frinstance:-
