Amplifiers

I'm thinking of investing in a new amplifier for about 500 quid or so, any suggestions would be helpful, thanks - Andy

What is that US?

Pink Moon 04-30-2007 06:02 AM

If it's gbp than 1,000 if it's euro then about 750.

andy 04-30-2007 09:45 AM

About 720 dollars, i think a fender Cabinet and head would be my best bet, what do you think? - Andy

A_Perfect_Sonnet 04-30-2007 08:41 PM

How much power were you looking for?

Peavey Valveking combo for like 550 or so is a really good amp.

EDIT: Buy Peavey ValveKing 212 Combo Amp online at Musician's Friend

My fault, a little more than 600.

Afew question to ask yourself

Do you plan to record, and if so mic or DI
What type of music do you mostly play or would care to be known to play
Gigging or not
How serious do you hope to get
Digital or Tube

You won't find a good Fender Cab for that much. Unless you buy it used. I would check out that ValveKing APS mentioned. Peaveys are great amps. You pretty much cant go wrong with a Fender, Peavey, B-52, or a Randall. You can't get much quality from Marshall unless you spend more than a grand (1000 dollars just in case Europeans don't use that term...sorry for my cultural ignorance). Crate amps are pretty much just crap in general....trust me, I own one. Line6 are terrible too...at least the Spider series is. Unless of course you like the sound of your guitar going through a synthesizer.

cardboard adolescent 06-05-2007 06:13 PM

get the kind with a lot of knobs... and that's really big.

littleknowitall 12-31-2007 09:46 AM

Look for a trace combo in the region of a couple of hundred watts, i bought one recently for 550 and you can't beat a trace sound, really, you can't go wrong. It wouldn't be valve but i really don't see any difference when it comes to bass amps, you've already got that warm sound regardless. And a transistor amp is far more reliable and lighter to carry.

Oh **** wait, guitar...crap, ok go valve, go marshal or orange, dont even consider a line 6 or laney they're crap, if you want a clean sound go fender.

Look into a half stack, Doubt you'l be able to find a mode 4 that cheap although i've seen them pretty close.

something in the way of a good quality marshal would be a great choice.

anticipation 12-31-2007 09:54 AM

get one that tunes and distorts when you clap.

those are the shit.

littleknowitall 12-31-2007 10:57 AM

I have no idea what that is? o.o

Halfa 01-26-2008 03:13 PM

hmmmm........how much do Marshal Stacks run for used?

cardboard adolescent 01-26-2008 03:38 PM

i'm so glad i just downloaded amplitube instead of paying for an amplifier

Halfa 01-26-2008 03:41 PM

but can u use it to perform?

cardboard adolescent 01-26-2008 04:56 PM

obviously it's better for recording, but i could if i bought some nice speakers

What kind of sound are you looking for?

WHat kind of uses recording or live?

Hard to get one amp to do everything.
I have a mesa/boogie, a marshall, a traynor basemate (killer canadian tube amp), maximouse portable amp and a crappy peavy combo. Each one has its use and I am looking for more.

I also have a a couple of guitar preamps which are a great way to get a sound quickly I have the Line 6 pod and the marshall JMP1 (which sounds great)

Amps I would love to have:

A 80s vintage Hiwatt, Vox ac30 and more marshalls.

really. that sounds awesome.

but then again i'm a huge Marshall Stack fan...mainly due to my Allman Brother's obsession...

littleknowitall 01-27-2008 03:48 AM

Which isn't a bad thing, you might be able to pick u a half stack if not then dont be afraid to go for a combo. They are loud enough and theres no difference in sound. I never understand why people are so obsessed with going half stack.

You are right that you should not be afraid to get a combo. But they do not sound the same as stacks. In fact there is huge variances in the stacks too!!

Usually with amps what happens it a manufacturer will get a reputation for a particular model and then they will start pumping out amps with lower quality components after the initial production run. This can be said for practically all of the major manufacturers like fender, marshal etc.

The boutique manufaturers like boogie and orange tend to use better quality parts on all their stuff.

Halfa 01-27-2008 09:32 AM

yea i gotta say stacks get some good tone. especially the older ones. the newer ones arent as good...but then again everything is going downhill because they want you to by MORE MORE MORE.

There are some good new amps but you have to check them out.

I'm looking into orange amps. They look and sound pretty sweet.

Halfa 02-05-2008 05:37 PM

hmm....i'm thinking about getting an epi halfstack cuz its nice and cheap....
altho i cant tell how much power it has...
its a halfstack with 5 watts.....

TheCaster 02-08-2008 07:46 AM

line 6 has some decent amps

Yeah they pack a ton into their amps. If you want one amp of many different sounds they are a great choice. Especially for the money. I do find that the amps that the line 6 is emulating do not measure up to the originals.

It does a great imitation of a Marshall but does not sound the same.

Halfa 02-09-2008 02:45 PM

ugg.....i dont like solid state amps
just tube.
as far as i've seen line 6 is only solid state arent they...?

you are right lots 'o' circuits in line six. Tries to be a million amps and usually comes up short.

Tubes are sweet for guitar. I've got two tube amps and love em both.

Halfa 02-10-2008 02:49 PM

hmmm...i'm considering getting an epi junior valve halfstack.....

for distortion just plug in a dan electro metal pedal or a boss distortion pedal

that should keep audiences happy.

Necromancer 02-29-2008 11:08 PM

My favorite bass amps are: AWB-Workmans first, Ampeg 2nd, Fender, Crate, Pignose, etc. Its basically not the brand or effects for that matter. Its the musician behind any amp that is the best on the market.
