Look for a trace combo in the region of a couple of hundred watts, i bought one recently for 550 and you can't beat a trace sound, really, you can't go wrong. It wouldn't be valve but i really don't see any difference when it comes to bass amps, you've already got that warm sound regardless. And a transistor amp is far more reliable and lighter to carry.

Oh **** wait, guitar...crap, ok go valve, go marshal or orange, dont even consider a line 6 or laney they're crap, if you want a clean sound go fender.

Look into a half stack, Doubt you'l be able to find a mode 4 that cheap although i've seen them pretty close.

something in the way of a good quality marshal would be a great choice.
