The first round of the decade was a 2020 $20 round. Dude broke out the Speedway gift card.

I missed the final putt that would've tied first place and pushed it to a playoff.

Chipping away at the stigma, one government official at a time:

Wait are you Craig Burrows-Johnson? You don't live in Alberta so that's not you is it?

Plankton 01-03-2020 08:30 AM

No. I have no idea who that is. There's an underlying movement to melt the hippy/stoner stigma away, and getting recognition from any governing body is another step in the right direction to that end. Just putting it in the spotlight here for awareness of the masses. All 5 of you.

The Batlord 01-03-2020 02:57 PM

But we are a bunch of hippies and stoners.

Plankton 01-04-2020 06:30 AM

Shhhhh.

Looking forward to getting back to Ledgestone this year. I missed last year thinking I was going to Hawaii, but that got rescheduled so I just ended up heading out to Nashville and checked out the Bowling Green courses in case I ever made it out to the Am Championships. I aint gettin any younger, so I need to make some moves real soon and put myself out there to see where I land. For me, it's all about the experience and friendships made. There are some fantastic people that are involved in this sport.

I was dialed in last night at putting leagues. I won "Hot Putter" in the first round, which is won by making every single putt in the round, and then my partner and me went on to take 3rd place out of 14 teams. This is one of the hardest leagues in the area too, and they made sure I knew it. One dude walked up to me and said "So you're gonna come up into the one of hardest leagues in the state and just fuken dominate huh?".

I went to a club tag challenge throw down over the weekend down south. Great people, lots of smiling faces and a good group on my card made for fun round. I managed to finish with a par. One funny moment was while we were waiting to start a guy was passing on his way to his starting hole and mentioned that we looked like a fun card. One guy yelled out: "Well, yours is cool too. I wouldn't put you in my spokes!"

lol

A 'card' is the people that are randomly placed together on a scorecard for a 'shotgun' start.

It was the last time anyone will play on that course too. They're tearing it all out and starting fresh because of Ash Bore damage, which has been a thorn in the side of quite a few courses over the years around here. Can't have any widow makers falling on people while they're out trying to putt, drive, and throw so they tear those infected tree's down and burn em, which takes away established flight lines so sometimes it's better to just start over. There's 2 other courses on the property so they'll still be huckin plastic out there during the rework.

The Batlord 01-13-2020 01:12 PM

They have three courses? Damn.

Plankton 01-13-2020 01:19 PM

Ooops. They actually have 5. There's a Blue, Red, White, and a Silver course. I always forget about Blue, since it's kinda bleh. The "Silver" course is the harder of the 4 though, and turns into a "Gold" course if you play the longer tee's. "Gold" being professional level distances.

What a busy year so far, not so much in the playing disc golf department but in the artwork, management, and miscellaneous and/or etc.department.
  • Artwork for a clubs team logo
  • Artwork for a clubs travel logo
  • Artwork for a tournament stamp that will be on discs and swag
  • Artwork/Video for putting leagues
  • Course map, hole signs, and players guide for a tournament
  • DJ'ing every Thursday night putting leagues

Keeps the marble sharpened.

Quote:

From 2011 to 2016, the number of U.S. courses dropped from 15,751 to 15,014 – an average loss of 147 per year. If this trend continues, there will be only 13,245 courses by 2028.

In comparison, disc golf is experiencing rapid growth and may be nearing a tipping point. In 2011, there were 2,982 U.S. disc golf courses, according to the Professional Disc Golf Association. By 2016, this number nearly doubled to 5,467 – an average gain of 497 courses annually. If this rate continues, disc golfers will have almost as many places to play as ball golfers in a decade.

One of the main reasons for ball golf’s decline is a falling participation among young Americans.

In the past, the 18- to 34-year-old age group was the most likely to play ball golf. But between the early 1990s and early 2010s, there was a 30 percent decrease in participation in this age group. Today, only 26 percent of ball golfers are between the ages of 18 and 34.

Perhaps young people are instead deciding to throw discs.

I put a call out for a round yesterday and a few club members responded, so we all met up at a course. At the last minute one of the club directors showed up, which was cool, so we all played in a group. The conversation was light and as funny as usual, but the club leader dude kept talking about the past artwork and how they wanted to go in a different direction...

Guess who's doing all the artwork for the club this year.

I love the guys artwork from previous years, and it's an honor to take the reigns. I'll be making an effort to keep his style of quirkiness alive.

Plankton 02-19-2020 08:02 AM

It's like losing a limb if it's a favorite disc that you can't replace. Most players have 1 or 2 discs like that, that they've broken in for years and their body mechanics and form on their throws are so interwoven into those discs, losing them is like pulling off a body part and throwing it away.

Plankton 02-19-2020 09:28 AM

Kona. She's got a great work ethic, and she throws a Sexy Firebird, like me.

I'm signed up for 6 tournaments this year and we're only a month and a half into 2020. I may need to take out a second mortgage cuz I'm doing as many as I can and this **** gets expensive.

Players packs are great and they usually exceed the players tournament cost, but going pro is where the real money's at. I dipped my toes in those waters last year, and judging by my performance then and at the level of play I'm at now, there's little chance of me seeing any of those dollars. So, it's am swag life for me until I get a bionic arm or (ghast!) learn how to correct my form. I've been told that I cut my throwing arm in too close to my body on my backhand throws. I've been messing with forehand throws and getting some decent distance but I'm not comfortable with it. Not like I used to be in the 90's.

Also, last year I did quite a bit of weight training and that will ruin your muscle memory, as it certainly did mine and you can see it in my scores around the beginning of the season. This year, I'm focusing on cardio and core, and there's a ton of good resources to utilize for just that.
