World Class for many years. Kind of unfortunate that Ronaldo came to prominence around the same time, and forced Rooney to play second fiddle. His goal tally would be about 50 more for United if he was the main man for those three or four years in my opinion. The guy had a pretty much 1 in 2 goal record over the span of his United career which is rather remarkable for somebody who played #9 for maybe two or three of those seasons.

Compare his goals output with somebody like Dennis Bergkamp for example. Miles more productive. I know they didn't play the exact role, but it's quite clear who was the better striker.

I believe that if he were born about 5 years later - with all other circumstances being the same - we would be talking about a striker who would be regarded as Legendary not just at Manchester United or in the PL, but in the history of the game. He had exactly what you want in the more modern configuration of the game. Teams play with deeper lines, tighter gaps between midfield and attack, and he would be the prototype modern striker that would be served well in those conditions - as we saw in his few seasons as the main man up top.
