Imo MLS definitely needs salary caps to ensure some degree of parity in the league. Americans are surprisingly content with MLS being a stepping stone to European leagues. If we tried to recruit the highest tier they’d all end up in the communities with the most Hispanics and after a few non-competitive seasons the rest of the country would lose interest. I know the USA has reputation for being obsessed with superlatives like “greatest” but as sports fans we’re surprising sophisticated (besides batlord). For example, very few college football players make the NFL but attendance at college football games still blow the NFL away. We’re never going to out premier the premier league(s) in Europe and making that the objective would be a recipe for disappointment. I follow football players from college to the nfl and often know their entire career. Hopefully, MLS will groom players for big time play in Europe and then when we watch big league soccer from Europe it’ll be more meaningful because we’ll know the players that came up through the ranks in MLS.

Great post Hawk mate. Obviously you want some parity but I don't think salary caps would result in a Scottish or German style monopolisation of the league. Plus surely fans want to see their teams and the league get stronger. Why would you want Kaka at 36 instead of 26?

In time I think you could tempt South Americans.

Good post mate.

Well, the league is healthy so I’m kind of thinking if ain’t broke...

Also, big name studs don’t mean much to me because I don’t know much about soccer

It’s probably such a different mindset

I went to J-League games when I lived in Japan and they got their own way of doing things, too. And their baseball, too, in fact but still people attend and enjoy the game.

When I watched Japanese pro-baseball I thought how bad it would suck if MLB didn’t keep the best players in the world which I’m sure is how you feel about the soccer you enjoy.

Yeah I hear what you're saying though it's a bit different here because we don't have all the top players playing here in just one place in the same way you would have with MLB in the US. You can find elite players and teams all over Europe and in South America. And even in places with smaller leagues like Scotland, Portugal, the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium and Russia you can still see exciting stuff and there's a lot there to attract me to a game which the US doesn't have at the moment I don't think. Its seen as a retirement home a bit, not as bad as China or Qatar but room for improvement imo.

OccultHawk 08-21-2018 01:00 PM

Fair enough bro

I think both our opinions got a full shot there

You should make Atlanta United your default MLS team like I did with QPR.
