Moyes was the right choice given what was out there as all the big boys were either signed (Pep) or were never going to leave their clubs (Klopp)

Moyes' recent comments though are not what I'd call smart:

David Moyes has warned Manchester United fans to expect more shock setbacks like Sunday's 4-1 derby mauling as he gets to grips with the job.

Moyes admitted he was left in a state of shock by the emphatic defeat at Manchester City but said the champions may have to suffer more dark days as they adjust to life after Sir Alex Ferguson's 26-year reign.

And Moyes admitted their failure to adequately strengthen in the summer transfer window means he and his players may have to endure more hiccups this season before they get it right.

"Not for a minute did I think this Manchester United job was going to be an easy job," said the Scot.

"There will be days like we had on Sunday, and there might be more of them because we're in a period where there will be transition.

"There's a new manager for the players, and in turn there will be new players as well at different times, so obviously that will happen.

"It does mean I may have to take a few more blows, definitely. Maybe even more than that - maybe all season I'll have to take a few blows - but I knew this was going to be the case because I was taking over from a great manager and it was always going to take time for me to get my own ways and change things round a little bit.

"It doesn't mean big jobs, but there will be some things. I think a lot of people thought Manchester United [winning the title] last season, but it was probably the form of other teams that was poor."

Moyes clearly has concerns at the level of quality within his starting line-up, not just his overall squad, after admitting he wanted to sign one or two players to go straight into the team.

United pursued Gareth Bale, Barcelona's Thaigo Alcantara and team-mate Cesc Fabregas, Ander Herrera of Athletic Bilbao, Everton's Leighton Baines and Fabio Coentrao of Real Madrid, but only managed to bring in Marouane Fellaini from Everton for £27.5million.

Moyes said: "I don't think it's actually the squad. I think we've got numbers.

"I think maybe where we've got work to do is bring players in, not for the squad, but to go right into the team, so that's the slightly different equation.

"It's not necessarily squad players we needed. We needed one or two who might have just gone straight into the team. But that will happen.

"Going back to that transfer window, we always said it was going to be a tough one and it was going to take a little bit more time."

United host arch-rivals Liverpool in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday, and Moyes said he expects an immediate reaction from his players following the debacle at City.

"When you've got the players we've got, I can see it's written all over their faces how they feel," he added.

"And when you've got ones like that you hope there will be a reaction and I'm sure there will be.

"I think it's important that I took the punches. I've taken the punches and I'm happy to do that. Any manager who's in a situation where they've lose a game will tell you that it's not a nice place to be when you've been well beaten, which we were.

"I hadn't seen that poor a level of performance from us either in our games - we looked quite easy to play against, which is not the norm.

"I think the one thing when you play here is that any team is always going to have a hard game against Manchester United. But I thought it was just too easy to play against us."

There's nothing positive in there. Moyes hasn't helped himself one bit since he took the job, from that very first press conference he has seemed completely out of his depth.

Moyes? I think he'll do just fine. Better than Fergie? No, but that'd be too much to ask of anyone, including the big hitters.
Only time will tell. I'd be satisfied with a regular top 4 place, rotating the title with the other front runners occasionally.
In other words, business as usual.
That's an insight into the psyche of most United fans...despite what rival fans think. Only the more recent, spoilt reds (the too young to remember) will show impatience with the new manager.

Maybe he's smarter than you think.
Moyes may not of inherited Fergie's little black book of referee's phone numbers, but it looks to me as if he's been handed the Fergie Book of Mind Games.
What if this morning's pre training pep talk was along the lines of, "Ignore what you've read about what I've said to the press. They're out to cut us down at the first opportunity and this is my way of getting it first to relive the pressure."

Make no mistake. United are still the team to beat. Even Graeme Souness couldn't fuck this team up inside a couple of seasons.

I doubt he'd undermine Fergie. In fact it'd be the last thing he'd want to do.

Remember the original Mourinho Rooney bid he announced to the press.?
An insulting 10M bid designed to unsettle the player. I doubt he was even seriously wanting him.
Moyes put it out that it was 10M + Luiz and Mata. (equally unlikely)
