Don't waste your money on protein shakes. there's nothing in them that you couldn't get from your food. The way they're marketing, people think they're an essential part of the working out process. They're not.

Well too late, I already have some on the way but after I finish with this batch. I won't buy anymore.

The point isnt to take the place of food...Protein shake is called a supplement for a reason. They actually are pretty helpful if you are gaining weight and trying to get bigger. I don;t know if you are aware how much food one has to eat to get the max amount of protein (1-1.5g per pound of bodyweight) every single day. All the powder is doing is giving you an easier way to reach that mark without having to cook more meals all day long. As long as macro's are hit for the day using the protein as a supplement is absolutely helpful.

Figure you weigh 270 pounds and are gaining muscle to play football. Getting 270g and up in protein EVERY DAY is incredibly hard to do and not to mention expensive. While most of your diet should come from natural foods boosting the protein count with a shake makes life 10x easier.

I know there are different types of protein powder.

I used to drink the meal replacement ones after working out in the mornings. I'd add some peanut butter and some oatmeal to it. I'd skip over breakfast completely if I had one.

the one I ordered recently wasn't to help me bulk up but help with quicker recovery time for my muscles in between workouts

Some people say consume protein within 30 minutes of finishing your workout. I think that's broscience though, the idea that there is a magic window where you must consume protein sounds like bs, the difference is going to be virtually fuck all. The reality is if you're not getting your set amount of protein every day, consistently, then you're not gonna see results. I use whey protein after training but mainly out of habit and the fact I like the drink and don't fancy eating a meal when I'm still hyped from lifting weights.

Overall I would just say whenever you feel most comfortable. Provided you get it. I've not noticed a difference either way.

Re: the discussion on whether protein powder is worth it or not, I'm with Rez. It's relative though, if you're expecting a magic potion then no they're not worth it, there is a lot of bad information out there and people end up with skewed views of what purpose protein powder actually serves. If your diet or training routine isn't in place then they're not worth it then either. They are a supplement (+ a food source), they supplement an already in place routine and diet.

No, protein powder is not necessary for any fitness goal. If your goal is to build muscle then you will require a set amount of protein intake per day, all protein powder does is help you to reach that target but it can be done easily enough without it.
Whey protein is made from drying milk, that's all it is. I use this stuff - Impact Whey Protein from Myprotein

47 quid for 5kg. I think there's about 300 servings in that, works out at just over 6p a serving lol. That is cheaper than food.

It absolutely is worth it.

Yeah, that's what I bought recently was Whey Protein. I didn't think it was similar to the meal replacement stuff that I used to buy.

Couldn't tell you anything about that 2nd link mate. My knowledge on supplements is piss poor to be honest. The only ones I use are whey protein and creatine (creapure). No idea if creapure is the best, just took someone's word for it.

One thing I do know is that I don't need creatine. I know that's more for bulking up.
