Geocaching
 

I have been involved in geocaching for a little over a year now, and have participated in multiple states. If you have not experienced the enjoyment of this activity, you are missing out. There are locations 'caches' all around the world. (probably 20 within 10 miles of where you live) All contain a log book that you sign, some contain valuables, but most are useless trinkets. There are items that you can track as they travel from place to place. Its basically a more mature, wide scale scavenger hunt. I like having the opportunity to go hunt for something, and sometimes having to be covert.

this is something i've been curious about for a long while now but i was always under the impression you needed to do a lot of driving, or at least a fair amount of it. is that the case? it seems there's always a significant amount of area to cover to participate.

any advice or tips for a noob looking to get in on the action?

I knew somebody who did geocaching for about 10 years, and I've been curious about it for a long time. I just don't have time to do it!

Yeah, alot of the hunts are coordinate based. If you dont have a handheld GPS (I dont), Google Maps is usually within 10 ft or so. Go type in your address or zip at that site, a list of caches will come up by distance from your location. Browse through them and find one that is easy (they have a star difficulty rating system at the top.) Alot of them will give hints, or riddles to aid you in hunting. I like to look in famililar places on the maps, like 'oh thats that big statue in the park' then youre set. Sometimes you really have to read into all the info given, whether it be comments from past finders, photos, etc.... My biggest piece of advice is to not get discouraged. Sometimes you will find it in five minutes, sometimes not. There have been times where I have gone back to a location 4-5 times before actually finding it. Give it a go and let me know how you do.

there's a target at my work. like literally, at the place where i leave to go work at in an hour hahahahaha actually it sounds like it's somewhere in the parking lot but still hahaha.


...and the bus station where the creeps and trannies hang out after dark (not going there) hahaha

Yeah man, right under your knows. Its pretty wild going and finding them, and seeing people walk by obliviously, it opens your eyes to a lot.

yeah i'll definitely look more into it in the next little bit, sounds like it could make for some good summer fun.

geocaching?

one time we did this but did not have a gps, so we just printed out a google map and found it on the side of the path in the mountains. We were pretty excited but it just had crap in it. Would be more fun with a GPS though..
