I think people's issue with it is the inconsistency with it. Sometimes they're given, sometimes they are. Depends on the week and the ref. If a penalty is given every time someone does it, it will soon stop. (This is more premier league debate than WC)

Optimistic View:
This is just our customary slow start. Their only goal came on a clear offsides that should've been called. We had plenty of good opportunities, but they played out-of-their-minds good on defense (keeper included). If this World Cup is known for 2 things, 1 of them is wins being terribly difficult to come by. The group is still open, and NZ has the leaders to face while we get the last place team. Pessimistic View: We were embarrassed by a team that comes from a country where football isn't even the most popular sport. Our only goal came off a PK that was the result of a soft call. We missed countless opportunities, and the ball handling and passing was utterly painful to watch. A team ranked 71 places below us, and we couldn't beat them. Going in we were criticized for being too old to win, and so far we've fallen flat on our faces. Neutral View: At least we're not England.

And so the world champions are held by a side which has only one full-time professional team in its domestic league, not to mention the first team to make the world cup finals with part-time players on its teamsheet since I can remember. Easily the shock of the tournament so far, unless of course North Korea can beat Portugal.
I really can't see NZ getting past Paraguay to make the last 16 either, but strange things happen in football (like Man U-Leeds in the FA Cup earlier this year), so I wouldn't rule it out completely. |

I couldn't resist
![]() Seriously though, I do think you can compare that to what might happen between NZ and Paraguay next week. It almost certainly won't, but there's always a chance that a team so far inferior to another can really get every aspect of its game together and humiliate a better-quality side - one of many reasons why I love football so much. |
