Watched in the UEFA cup as well. Look, I'm not denying that he's a great player, but if he can't perform when it matters, what's the point of keeping him?

It's really overdue for England to realize that they're not a great team. You haven't won the World Cup in 44 years, yet you still expect victory in every tournament. The sooner you lower your expectations, the sooner you can start enjoying the games. (That's not to say that they shouldn't have beat Algeria.)

As do both Holland and Spain in every World Cup, 2 countries that have never won it at all!!!

Just because a player has a couple of bad games in vital matches its no reason to get rid of him. Ronaldo had the same stigma for years and Messi was terrible in the Champions League semis against Inter-Milan, it just happens and its part of a players development.

England were absolutely pathetic - worst performance I've seen from them in years. Rooney and Gerrard were awful, but they weren't the only ones constantly giving the ball away and showing a total lack of class and international quality.

On the other hand, I think there's consolation in the fact that we aren't the only ones struggling. Spain, Germany and France are other teams that should have walked through this phase on paper, but their chances of doing so are gonna go right down to the last game of the group phase. Plus, taking a step back and looking at the result for what it is, we're still unbeaten and still have the tournament well in our hands. All we have to do is beat a Slovenian side that we beat in a friendly not so long ago, and with basically this same team too.

Yes, it was an utterly dire performance, but I refuse to get pessimistic until it's all genuinely over.

Absolutely abysmal. I fucking hate being an Englishman when it comes to supoorting my national team - they'll give me a hernia one day.

As for Rooney, maybe if he and his so-called 'world-class' team mates actually managed to play football the fans who've spent shedloads and travelled miles to support them would actually be a bit more understanding.

Argh, im fucking furious. Incompetent swines.

The WC goes on and first up today is Holland v Japan and a victory will see the victor through with Argentina. Denmark v Cameroon should be interesting as both cannot afford to lose, but most interesting today will be Ghana v Australia because a Ghana victory really puts the krauts in serious problems after their defeat to Serbia.

Fingers crossed Australia can dust themselves off from the toweling Germany issued them and put in a respectable showing here, with Cahill and grella out they look very thin though, Kewel is going to have to wind back the clock and bring his best to ignite a spark.

As cool as I think it'd be if Japan made the last 16 again (they were one of the real disappoints in Germany '06 for me), bloody hell are they a chore to watch. The first half of the yet-to-be-concluded Holland game pretty much bored me to tears.
