Can't his dismissal be overruled by FIFA, so that he will be able to play in the next game?

Nope. For some reason best known to themselves, FIFA don't allow appeals against cards during tournaments.

On another note, was I the only one who thought Brazil looked really, really ordinary last night (not to mention in their first game)?

@lateralus- Pim Veerbeeks contract with the FFA Expires after the cup and both sides have agreed to part ways. I feel he had to play defensive football against the Germans who may well have put a few more on us if we'd been pushing forward, we'd all penciled that in as a draw since the groups were drawn he was just following the script.

NZ have been a thrill to watch at this cup seeing as they are effectivly an A-league side ( our local comp down under)

also really enjoying watching North Korea they looked up for it early but Portugal turning the screws on them now.

Kakas send off was an embarrasment for FIFA.

How much better would Ireland have been to watch than the insipid French.

That is all

7-0, absolutely fantastic second half.

Even some of the players who stood out less were fantastic.

Completely made up for a terrible first match, I'm absolutely godsmacked.

The officiating is the reason this is still only catching in America. ironically, the Cup has grown, state-side, because of our missing goal.

honestly though, what the **** is going on with the refs? Is it always this bad?

I understand people being excited, but theres a strong chance these people are going to be beaten when they get home.

In a word, yes. There are times when it has been worse though.
See Maradona's hand of God incident, or Geoff Hurst's crossbar goal against West Germany in the 1966 final, among countless others.
It's all part of the rich tapestry of football and the controversy rages for years.
The ugly side of football, perversely, adds to "The Beautiful Game".

The last World Cup they qualified for was back in 1966 and unless I'm mistaken they were imprisoned on return.
They got off lightly by comparison to some of the Iraqi national team who were tortured by Saddam's son, Uday, for poor performances.
Which is nothing compared to the fate of Colombian Andres Escobar, who was murdered for a mistake he made during the 1996* Finals.

Edit: *1994
