Winter Olympics 2010

Anyone been watching? I've checked it out a couple times, but mostly looking forward to the Mens Hockey.

Burning Down 02-15-2010 07:54 AM

I've been watching! I'm also looking forward to the hockey. I watched the Canadian women's hockey team squish the Slovakian team 18-0 the other day, but in my opinion the teams were not evenly matched. It was also nice to hear that Canada got it's first gold medal on home soil yesterday.

sidewinder 02-15-2010 11:47 AM

I watched a few hours on Saturday. Too many commercials unfortunately, so it gets annoying (no Tivo/DVR for me). I watched the short track speed skating, that was fun. A bit of luge and mogul skiing also.

I really wish I could go up there next weekend. So close, yet so far away (expensive).

I saw the womens today, it was pretty sick.

USA Mens hocket team beat the swiss 4-1 I think it was. Ryan Miller is a beast..

8-0 Against Norway. Pretty stellar performance from my boys in the 2nd and 3rd. They were skatin a little flat footed in the first.

pourmeanother 02-17-2010 01:58 AM

I'm a sucker for all things Winter Olympics. I'm not even ashamed to admit that I watch all of the figure skating (maybe slightly ashamed). My family is into skating. I've watched every event up till now except I missed the Biathlon, which sucks because that's a very entertaining event.

What are your guys' thoughts on the Women's Hockey "controversy"? I think it's bullshiit. Canada and the USA should score less goals, because it's unfair that other nations can't field a competitive team... We chastise a team for winning a hockey game 18-0, but vilify Usain Bolt for slowing down at the end of his 100 race in the Summer games. You can't have it both ways. The Olympics are about winning, and you go out there and you play a 60 minute hockey game. You don't let up. You try to smash records, and you don't worry about other nations' or competitors' 'feelings' if you do. If you can't tell, this issue has sort of struck a chord with me (I realize that 99% of people don't care about Women's Ice Hockey...). Instead of dropping the sport, they should only allow Canada and the United States to qualify- and stop this charade until the other teams catch up.

I'm amped up for this Curling action, and the imminent Canada vs. USA hockey match. U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A!!!

That was an excellent game. I'm glad they were able to pick it up a little in the last 2 periods.

I watched some of the Mens figure skating last night. I dont think youre lame for watching it, the only thing I have against it is it doesnt interest me that much, and its a bit boring. I think every team should go out and crush everyone else. Mens Ice hockey is going to be insane when the US, Canadians, and Russia start to meet up. I honestly can say I was no more impressed by one than the other two, so this should be good. On the womens side, I was initially nervous abour Finland and Sweden, but after Finlands showing against the Chinese, I no longer fear them, and hopefully Canada takes care of Sweden with ease today. Go USA.

pourmeanother 02-17-2010 04:15 PM

US hockey is all about Miller Time. It was nice to see them poke some past Hiller- who is a good goalie in his own right- but we were really sloppy. If we played like that against a powerhouse, we would get slaughtered... So let's just hope it was first game jitters.

One gripe- why is so much stuff on tape delay on the West Coast?! I am in the same damn time zone as Vancouver, but I'm getting stuff on a delay- while the East Coast gets it live. Every event is being spoiled by sports sites, Yahoo!, or facebook status updates. Hockey is one exception so far- but all of the skiing, skating, etc has been spoiled.klefjsklfds

I'd say the U.S. has the strongest goaltending of any national team right now. I know Luongo posted a shutout yesterday but Ryan Miller is absolutely on fire, making all the right saves despite a lackluster defense. I'd be happy seeing them take bronze; unless Kane and Kessel step up they'll be lucky to put in more than one against Canada or Sweden.

Russia's offense is easily the most potent, but they don't have the depth in defense or goaltending to carry them through the medal rounds. Both Canada and Sweden pose significant threats to derail their power play and actually have that necessary depth. The two goals that LATVIA put in should be a wake-up call to Russia -- Nabokov isn't what he once was and has a predilection for choking in big games.

Well, what's interesting is that this season in the NHL (notably the past 4 months) Nabokov has been the most consistently good in net that he's been in his entire career- a month ago he had 6 straight starts where he gave up only 1 goal; streak of 11 straight road wins; the other night he set a career high in saves with 50-... Yet, the standard questions are arising. Can he elevate himself in big games? History says no, and he doesn't have the D to bail him out in these games. I haven't heard much talk about Sweden as I would have expected, but, as you pointed out, they are as legitimate a threat as anyone else there.

pourmeanother 02-18-2010 12:26 AM

Julia Mancuso wins a gold medal in babe-ness. Swiss netminder looked good too- hard to tell behind that mask, though.

Better goaltending than Canada? Ryan Miller? Put the pipe down.

pourmeanother 02-18-2010 01:35 AM

That's interesting... I don't remember ever saying better goaltending than Canad- Oh, that's right, I didn't.

Toooo close for comfort tonight. We played a baaad game, couldnt keep the puck in our zone. The Swiss are a reaaally well coached team, everyone knows their role and they do all the small things. They could have easily stole that win from us tonight. We gotta tighten up big time and I hope Bab**** fuckin rips into the boys tonight.

Canada's win was really a lucky break imo.

This and the 6-1 victory over Norway make the U.S. a much more threatening force in the Olympics.

In other news, RUSSIA LOST. Slovakia managed to squeak an upset in six shootout rounds, with Halak stopping everything except for Ovie's forehand.

No problem bud, I overreacted to a harmless mistake anyway.

Well, this is awkward... Marleau, Thornton, Boyle, Heatley-- suck it?? Go USA? Yeah, GO USA!

I've been following the Winter Olympics pretty closely other then the hockey. Biggest Dissapointment: Gretchen Bleiler getting 11th in Women's Halfpipe. We could've sweeped it. Plus, it blows seeing the 2nd most attractive American fall twice.

Burning Down 02-21-2010 06:41 PM

I'm watching the hockey game between Canada and the US right now. A really intense, fast paced game. Currently the score is 2-2.

pourmeanother 02-21-2010 07:07 PM

The US breakaway, into Canada counter-attack break, into another US breakaway might be solidifying this thought.... One of the most exciting hockey games I've seen in a looong time.

someonecompletelyrandom 02-22-2010 01:36 PM

... And we'll be back with Mankind's most cherished and time-honored sporting event in just a moment, BUT FIRST - How 'bout them Doritos?

And to top it off, Kesler's glorious bid for the empty netter at the end. Ryan Miller is absolutely on fire right now and if this continues through the rest of the season he'll surely be the top candidate for the Vezina trophy at the end of the year.

Thrice 02-23-2010 09:49 AM

This is pretty much how Ryan Miller has played all year. I dont really see how anyone was surprised at all. I didn't even think it was that huge of a win. Miller is a systematic goalie, a new breed. The biggest surprise for me is a Russian loss. Between Malkin, Ovie, and Kovi they should be putting up ridiculous numbers. As much as I love Marty, thanks for that rad baseball play. USA walking into the Gold Medal game. Can't wait for the Rus/Can game! One formidable opponent is getting knocked off. I'm surpried thre hasn't been much talk of Sweden. They still have a beast of a team. Finland is diesel, and they made them look like chumps. Unbelievable hockey this time. Like others have said, between the b2b2b breakaways and the EN that was an incredible hockey game.

Burning Down 02-23-2010 01:19 PM

Canada plays Germany tonight. As for womens hockey, Canada basically walked right into the gold medal game, winning over Finland 5-0. The Finnish goalie played very much like Ryan Miller does. She was excellent, but the rest of Finland's team lacked on the offense. They only had 11 shots on goal and Canada had 50! Canada plays the US on Thursday in the gold medal match.

kamrinjacobs 02-24-2010 08:33 PM

Hi Friends,
I saw man's hockey yesterday.
Before that I saw Luge and Canada wins one gold medal.
Its really cool.

Gold medal favorites again? I certainly hope so... Get that pressure on them again and they'll crack.

I think playing Slovakia will give them a challenge. Or maybe not, who knows. I'm just happy we've made it this far!

Burning Down 02-25-2010 06:38 PM

Well the Canadian women have won gold! Now it's up to the men

Laces Out Dan! 02-25-2010 09:34 PM

pourmeanother 02-27-2010 08:51 PM

Round 2. FIGHT!

lucifer_sam 02-28-2010 05:08 PM

Even though the Americans lost I can't be upset about their showing in the gold medal match. Parise's equalizing goal with 22.7 seconds left floored me, I nearly shat myself. And Crosby's gratuitous tip-in at the end solidifies his place among the golden hockey greats, definitely on par with Lemieux and Gretzky.

Solid, well-played finals.

anticipation 02-28-2010 05:18 PM

I'll agree that he's on pace to become one of the greatest players of all time, but Crosby's showing in this tournament certaintly isn't a high note for him. Two straight single-elimination games without a point or noticible contribution and this is supposed to be the face of the league? Aside from his fortuitous goal to clinch gold, Sid played a very limited role in bringing glory to Canada, but people will always glorify his short-side wrister on Miller to excess.

lucifer_sam 02-28-2010 05:46 PM

I'm not talking about the tournament, the game-winning goal is an unbelievable capstone for anyone's career. For a big name like Crosby to accomplish that actually means something. Just look at Mike Eruzione, who is to this day pontificated by his achievement playing in the Lake Placid games, even though he was a mediocre player at best and didn't do shit after he won.

At 22, Crosby already has captainship, an Olympic gold medal and a Stanley Cup. Nobody else in the history of hockey has ever accomplished so much so quickly. So yeah, I'd say he'll be up there with the greats in a few years.
