Yes, just about every English person knows the Ashes! The only time I ever visited Australia was to see us loose a few years ago,

Not as keen on cricket, but very good sport to socialise.

In 2005? That was the first time i visited Australia as well. Only came for the last 2 tests though so we'd already lost by then. Was still an amazing experience, not to mention the English fans still being louder than the Aussies despite losing 5-0.

Mind you, the 2005 one was the best one I've ever seen. Didn't go to the games that time, but that was an incredibly exciting series.
