His talent is certainly worth more, but the only other option would be to just let him walk.

You're acting like you're in the Cardinals organization. I find it hard to believe there was no other option. The Patriots turned Deion Branch into a 1st round pick, and we're about to enter an uncapped season... I find it hard to believe there wasn't another better deal to be had out there. Just because their hands are tied to trading him, doesn't make a bad deal suddenly good. It is what it is.

If there was a better offer they would have taken it. I doubt there was anyway, most teams will be trying to spend less in an uncapped year. I'm not saying it was a good deal, just the best there was.

Obviously there wasn't a better offer on the table, but one likely would have presented itself in due time.

I think that as for the uncapped free agency it's not that teams are going to spend less, so much as they are going to shy away from the restricted free agents, who now qualify if they are under 6 years of service (not the usual 4). It may take a while for Merriman to sign as it will cost a team a 1st AND 3rd round draft pick with the Chargers matching the offer. It's not that teams don't want to spend the money for free agents, it's that they don't want to part with those picks on top of the dollar amount. Brandon Marshall and Vincent Jackson fall under this, making it all the more reasonable for a team to offer a 1st and/or 2nd rounder for Boldin in a trade, instead of dealing with matching offers/draft picks/dollar amounts.

I say with 100% certainty that they would have received more than a 3rd and 4th rounder if they held out longer. 100%. They sent a 5th rounder too.... They pretty much gave him away. That, is a bad deal no matter what the circumstances.
