Fight Card:
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (237) vs. Tim Sylvia (261) for the UFC Interim HW title Brock Lesnar (265) vs. Frank Mir (255) Jeremy Horn (185) vs. Nate Marquardt (185) Ricardo Almeida (185) vs. Rob Yundt (185) Tyson Griffin (155) vs. Gleison Tibau (156) Kyle Bradley (170) vs. Chris Lytle (170) Tim Boetsch (205) vs. David Heath (205) Marvin Eastman (185) vs. Terry Martin (186) Rob Emerson (155) vs. Keita Nakamura (155) This is Brock Lesnar's UFC debut, so we'll se if he can put his money where his mouth is. In only his 2nd MMA fight EVER, he's taking on the former UFC HW champion, Frank Mir. Mir is a far shot from Lesnar's first opponent Min Soo Kim, whom Lesnar demolished in a mere 69 seconds. Smart money's on Mir, but I'm about to splooge just thinking about this fight (in a totaly heterosexual way...) Also, Timmy vs Nog for the "Interim" UFC HW belt. I wonder why its "interim" considering that current champ Randy Couture has publicly stated that he will NEVER fight for the UFC again. I think that Horn/Marquardt has the ingredients to be the fight of the night. Horn is a multiple time world champ in BJJ, and Marquardt is a submission artist who has been King of Pancrase on several occasions. We also get to see the 185 debut of Marvin "The Beastman" Eastaman. Let's discuss. |
Where you at Scott, who's your pick for Lesnar/Mir?
|
Nog won, becoming the "Interim" UFC HW champ.
Mir made Lesnar tap to a heel hook at about 90 seconds in, but Lesnar man-handled the f*ck out of Mir. |
link to that fight ^

yeaa, Lesnar looked wild but was stupid and left his leg out there for a submission master to break haha. I think he does have a future in the MMA though. Chris Lytle's preliminary fight was nutty. And I was super stoked to see Nogueira get Sylvia in the guillotine. I hate Tim :)
|
Sylvia definitely earned some points in my book though, dominating Nog for 2 straight rounds, he looked way better than in his previous ...well..dozen or so fights lol. But thats Nog, you slip up once and he submits you.
Lesnar was too eager to finish it early, thats what cost him. But for only being his SECOND mma fight ever, he was damn impressive. He's supposed to be headlining a card here in a few months. His GnP was awesome, he will definitely be HW champ in a few years. I've also heard rumors that Mir will either face Sylvia next, or the winner of Herring/Kongo. |
so me and scott are the only ones who like mma? lame/
|
Well, we're obviously the only kool ones nah mean?
Also...the next card is stacked I can't wait. Silva and Henderson is gonna be insane. Silva is gonna tear shit up. I always love seeing Kongo fight because he is getting so much better and smarter as a fighter. And Fitch..I cant say enough about him. My favourite Welterweight...He's an amazing fighter and so exciting to watch. |
This thread is now the official Mixed Martial Arts thread. Discuss...

CroCop has parted ways with the UFC. He is now fighting for DREAM (formerly DreamStage, aka the former owners of PRIDE). DREAM is owned by K-1, and will replace HERO's as K-1's MMA division.
DREAM is said to be on good terms with M-1 Global, who owns the contract of Emelianenko Fedor, the world'd top ranked HW. This could possibly open the door for the long awaited Fedor/CroCop II fight that we've all been waiting for since they met in '05. |

I've got my money on Herring over Kongo. Kongo has kickboxing on his side, thats about it. Herring is a more well-rounded fighter and has loads more experience. Fitch is nothing special IMHO. He has bet some OK competition in Burkman and got lucky over Sanches, until he beats a real welterweight like Fickett or Koscheck, Im not buying into the hype. |

Anderson "the spider" Silva
I've been watching Silva since his PrideFC days where he was a very good fighter, but the guy has developed into a nearly unbeatable killer! I really thought Dan Henderson would beat him, given the stylistic matchup..but wow..the guy is a striking machine with slick submissions and cardio that doesn't quit..and such a humble guy too! Any ideas about who can beat him at 185? Filho trains with him so that's a moot point..Lindland I could see giving him trouble but I always thought Hendo was superior to Lindland in every way..He may just retire undefeated..
|
Moved to the right thread.
I think Henderson was his worst match hes faced yet, and I cant think of one fighter who would give him a better go. I dont see Silva being beaten for a long time. |
I think Melvin Manhoef could give Anderson Silva a battle in the stand-up but will be in trouble against silva's ground game...Jacare's ground game could prove a serious threat to Silva IF he could take the fight there
|
Silva is a highly intelligent fighter and as much as he'd like to kick and knee through people's heads. He trains like a maniac and knows exactly how to expose fighters weaknesses.
|
another fight I'm really looking forward to is Frank Shamrock vs. Cung Le...Le has done an awesome job of adapting San Shou to MMA...he pulls of some beautiful techniques...I hope he KO's Shamrock, but Shammy's experience and well-roundedness may prove too much for Le...thoughts?

I'll be at the IFL in NJ or Friday (photographing the event)...anyone else going?
|
Strikeforce has signed a TV deal with NBC and EliteXC has signed a TV deal with CBS. We'll soon get to see MMA on network television.
|
hopefully they'll get James Thompson to fight Kimbo..
|
Thats the plan last I heard. I'm hoping to see Kimbo get PWN'd as soon as possible.
|
On a side note, I've begun my own MMA training. I've joined a gym here in my hometown (Hullett House) and my first amateur fight is supposed to be sometime in July. I've done some freestyle wrestling and kickboxing, so I'm not starting out from nothing, but this stuff is WAYYY harder than I had first thought. The cardio it takes is ungodly.
|
Tim Sylvia vs. Fedor Emelianenko has been confirmed for July. Poor Timmy, he's gonna die.
|
What company are they fighting in?

Also, 2-time NCAA Division 1 HW champion, 3-time NCAA Division 1 All-American wrestler, 1996 Olympic gold medalist, and current TNA wrestling HW champion Kurt Angle has "confirmed" an MMA fight with Randy Couture for the near future. Angle is usually full of sh*t, so I'll wait for word from Couture's camp before I believe this one 100%. |
I hate Kurt Angle and all his talk.
|
Kurt thinks that b/c Couture is older and can still do MMA that he can too. There's a difference though, Couture has been doing this his entire life, Kurt wants to come in with 6 months of training and thinks he'll dominate. Angle may be a good wrestler, but it's going to take more than some amateur wrestling (which he hasn't even done since he won an Olympic medal in 1996) to dominate or even win in MMA, especially going against a vet like Randy Couture.
Angle also says "the money hasn't been right," but he has been offered 7 figures on numerous occassions to do an MMA fight and has turned it down. |

Huuuuge fights tonight. Speakin of Luter..he's going down :)
Also, GSP is gonna knock Serra's block off. I hope he beats the hell out of him for at least 2 rounds and then gets a highlight knockout. |
