The interesting thing about Rask is that his mental game might be one of his stronger assets. He is known to flip out after letting in goals, but only after ones that he has absolutely no control over. He's let in plenty of weak goals but I find he bounces back extraordinarly well from them, which shows a strong mental game. The Providence freak-out happened in a shootout where there were two VERY questionable calls that didn't go his way. This was years ago BTW. The game was over, and he flipped. The throwing the stick incident happened when he stoned a guy on a breakaway, stopped the rebound, but then was prevented from stopping another rebound because a Bruins defenseman had slid into his crease. And then Seidenberg screened him tonight. These are all legit reasons to get upset. I really have no excuses for the choke last year, but I actually place very little blame on Rask. I remember he had one brutal game (game 5 I think), but other than that he was very solid. Every goal is imprinted into my memory from game 7: deflection off Stuart's stick, deflection off Hunwick's back on a wraparound, blown defensive coverage by Ference on a rebound, deflection off Stuart again which led to a point blank shot in the slot for Gagne in the slot when he was already down trying to stop the original shot. Basically what I'm trying to say is that he gets an unfair knock against him for that series. I love Detroit and also think they're the best. I'm not a fan of Zetterberg because he's kind of cheap in how he goes about the game (clutching and grabbing, and never seems to get called for it), but I love Datsyuk. Easily one of my favourite players in the game. |

Yeah Reimer stood on his head. I'd say the Bruins probably outplayed the Leafs for the majority of that game. Seguin in particular had a bunch of good chances, which was nice to see since Julien usually keeps a leash on him.
Yeah Giggy has really collapsed. Doesn't seem like all that long ago when he was one of the top goalies and the league, and who could forget his run in the playoffs in '03? At least they got rid of Blake in that deal (not to mention Toskala). As for Rask, Julien called the speculation that he put Thomas back in because of Rask's reaction "ridiculous". Thomas was even supportive of Rask saying that the defense needs to let some shots go through and let the goalie have a clear view of it rather than trying to block everything. Seidenberg is arguably the best shot-blocker in the league, but he's not a goalie. He needs to let Rask see that. "Can you imagine if Rask let in an ugly goal and Seidenberg turned around and yelled at him and threw his arms up like that?" I was a goalie for over 10 years (I quit playing hockey a couple years ago), and while it's a complete double standard, it's just a given to not do that. Goalies are fragile creatures. There really is no position like it in sports. There is an immense amount of pressure. And this is me just speaking at a rep level. I couldn't imagine the NHL. Goalies do get a pass for this kind of behaviour, and for protection against that kind of criticism in-game because of the pressure on them. |

A nice win tonight in Detroit. Lou put on a clinic with 40 something saves in the W. It was good to see Bieksa back in the lineup and I think he played pretty well. Also, Daniel nets two the day after his baby daughter is born. Good couple days for him I guess. Really unfortunate to see Malhotra go down the way he did, gone for the remainder of this season and who knows for his future. Good chance he never plays again, pretty emotional time for him after one of his strongest seasons in memory for a team who has made magic all season long.

Watched it on VS, good game. My team was blacked out due to the Kings game for the first period- missed 6 goals, including 1st career goal by Andrew Desjardins and a pair by Marleau. Pissed.

Yeaaa, I managed to watch most of that game last night. One of the more anticipated games of the season Id say coming off the last 2 they played.
