I'm taking Caps, Panthers, Stars (I think the Wild will be a major handful) and Kings in the series that start tonight, which means Fred is taking Flyers, Islanders, Wild and Sharks

The last playoff round to get started is Ducks/Preds, I'm taking Ducks. At least Fred won't bet against me on this one.

Don't know who's going to win... but here's how I hope it plays out.
WEST Blues beat Chicago... love the Blues and want to see them win the west this year... they've never won a cup and it would be amazing to watch such a great franchise do it for the first time. Like to see Blues finish the series as quick as possible to put them in better position for the next round, though I concede Chicago are probably the best team in the west, if not the league, so doubtful that will happen. Stars beat Wild... I like the Wild better, mostly because of Dubnyk, but I want to see the Stars win just because at the end of the day I feel they have a better chance of upsetting Chicago should they make it past St. Louis. Preds go to 7 against Ducks... don't love or hate either of these teams... Ducks are the better playoff team historically, but they feel weaker this year, like their best years are behind them. Preds are up and comers... Rinne could take a team deep into the playoffs on his own. Sharks beat LA... LA is the most playoff oriented team in the league... they're the slackers in the regular season who always baffle us by suddenly switching from 75% to 100% when it actually matters. Love Lucic on the Kings now too. Just hope the Sharks beat them so that St. Louis has a better chance at winning the conference, and so that the Sharks can get the playoff monkey off their backs. Wouldn't have called Sharks over Kings before the playoffs started... but based on the 2-0 lead they have so far... I'm not complaining. EAST Rangers over Pens.... As much as I want Crosby and his hot Penguins to prove all of the doubters who have been saying he's washed up wrong... as a Leafs fan, the pick we got from the Kessel trade is most valuable if they choke in the first round. Lundqvist makes it possible for the Pens to lose the series... it can go as many games as needed as long as Pens don't make it to the second round. The leafs had a conditional pick from the Pens based on them making the playoffs, and now that has happened, we're routing against them again to make the pick higher in the draft :P. Washington over Flyers... Not a long shot to ask for this... Phila has been playing well, and yet Washington has still bettered them in the first two games. Washington has a beauty of a team this year... I'm routing for them to win it all.... Do it for Ovy to have a cup... Do it for the east to win one. Do it. Detroit over Tampa... Don't really care who wins this one. I like Detroit but don't think they have what it takes to make a true cup run. Tampa was fun to watch last year, but there are more worth while teams to root for year imo, and I'd rather see Detroit advance since they have less likelyhood of upsetting Washington. I also don't like how Tampa blatantly rips off Toronto's duds. Not cool Stamkos you poser. Either sign with Toronto for a 10 year 1 mil deal, or come up with your own jersey idea. Florida over Islanders.... Love both of these teams... Florida is one of the most likable teams in the NHL this year, with Jagr being such a beauty, and the young team around him and infront of Luongo exciting all true hockey fans. So much to like. At the same time the Islanders have a lot of players I like... both defensively and through to the third line... guys like Grabovski and Kulemin (old favourites from their days with the leafs) make it impossible for me not to cheer for them. That said, I don't think Griese can carry them very far, as good as he's tended at times. Slight edge to Florida based on playoff potency and how fun they are to watch alone. Skip ahead and hopefully we have something along the lines of a Capital vs. Florida Eastern final, against a Blues vs. Sharks western final. Then Capitals vs. Blues for the cup.... if that happened I'd be stoked for either team to win it. |

I have to ask, where does this Ducks hate come from? And before you say it's obvious, it's not. Is it SoCal? |

Now though, I find the ducks having more and more players that I just don't like or find pretty gross. Perry and Getzlaf probably represent my two least favorite "star" players in the league. And then they go ahead and add kesler and bieksa from the equally gross early 10s canucks teams. Chris stewart, garbutt, perron. They have all of the "we play with an 'edge' while being insufferably whiney about it" thing going on. [as an aside, game 2 was the first game id watched via the ducks broadcast and holy hell it was the worst commentating ive ever heard. not just your usual lame homerism, they were crying about not getting breaks for the entire game and intermissions. just a complete lack of self awareness it was astounding.] I find myself getting attached to teams based on their personnel, and the ducks just have nobody (besides horcoff I guess) that I can stand to cheer for. and so I pray for them to burn out. |
