So apparently the cap's going up to $64 million next year, which makes me think of a possible repeat for Boston.
Rex is retiring, Marchand is an RFA, and Kaberle and Ryder are UFA's. Other than that, everyone else is signed. Kaberle, don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. I'm kind of indifferent to Ryder. He can be great at times, but is very inconsistent. I wouldn't say no to something like $2-2.5 million though. Marchand is obviously a must sign, and I can't even begin to imagine what he'll make. Could be $2 million, could be $3 million with that run. I'm also assuming Savard will retire. So, if Savard retires, Marchand resigns at $3 million, you include Seguin's bonuses, and Ryder and Kaberle walk, that would leave: Lucic-Krejci-Horton Marchand-Bergeron-X Peverley-Kelly-Seguin Paille-Campbell-Thornton Chara-Seidenberg Ference-Boychuk McQuaid-X Thomas Rask With just over $10 million to fill in the two X's. Although I wouldn't advise it because Krejci and Rask will be up for new contracts next year, you could go after Richards at about $7 million and still sign a solid top 4 defenseman as well. I'll make a prediction though. Boston has won, in the past 10 years, 7 championships in one sports team or another. We had parades everytime and I don't think I've ever seen a crowd like this. Reports coming in now say there was an estimated 1.5 million who came down. For a long time when the Patriots were steamrolling everything in their way, people asked "So are we a football town now, or are we still a baseball town?" After Saturday, I dare say we're a Hockey town. Boston fans will turn just about anything into an "us v. them" style battle. I wouldn't be surprised if you see the profile of Hockey rise a little higher on this side of the border. Sounds like a long road, but these people are rabid for victory whether it be in a professional sport, or some highway road game.
