Organic Soundtracks
What are some soundtrack songs that are naturally implemented into the movie? For example, a band playing the music in the scene or the characters are listening to the radio or something along those lines as opposed to traditional soundtracks where it's added over the film.
One of my favourites, from Lost Highway O Brother is chock full of em Eyes Wide Shut does it well too (clip contains nudity) |
The Byrds - Ballad of Easy Rider

Spoiler for some nightclub/party scenes from various 60's flicks:

Jeff Beck playing I'd Die For This Dance in the movie Twins was a nice treat. Really the only redeeming quality in that dreck. I'd post the only video I can find of it, but it's worse than watching the actual movie itself.

A couple of scenes from a German film featuring the late, great, David Bowie...
|
I think word for that is diegetic.

Yeah, in film there's diegetic (on screen) and non diegetic (soundtrack, voiceover) sound. So I think that that's the word you're looking for.
Birdman has a few really great moments where you see the drummer, which I though was really cleverly incorporated. If I recall, the debut Ana Lily Amirpour film (which is excellent) has a few really stand out moments. Oh, and the Screamin' Jay Hawkins tape in Stranger than Paradise. |
The Hannibal music where the orchestra is playing Bach.
Scenes from The Piano. Dazed and Confused at the end when he blasts Foghat through the speakers. Scenes in Almost Famous. 24 Hour Party People |
Reservoir Dogs radio
The Warriors radio |
Do The Right Thing Public Enemy

Bar Scene and Frat Party scene in Animal House

That Cheech and Chong one is one of my all-time faves. What a fantastic hook!

In the movie If, the protagonist makes an unlikely selection on a jukebox and that becomes the soundtrack:-
There are so many movies about performers, where the soundtrack is er diegetic. Here are a couple that Psy-Fi seems to have missed:- ...... ......."The continent of Europe is so wide, Mien Herr. ........Not just up and down, but side to side Mien Herr" |
*mein Herr

oops! that's almost embarrassing enough for me to go back and edit out the mistake. Thanks!

Watching The Wailing and while I don't like it that much so far, I've gotta say that the exorcism scenes are awesome. Mainly because of the amazing percussive music. I have to check out whether this is in any way genuine korean shamanistic music. I need more of that.
|
Well, that took me to a pretty strange YouTube clip, grindy, but, yes, with some emotive, stirring drumming.
|
This is a great topic. I can't think of many relevant examples to add, but the scene in the opening of The Magdalene Sisters where the guy with the bodhran is singing "The Well Below the Valley" during a wedding (quite an odd song choice for a wedding..) is amazing and incredibly haunting.

Gilda: Rita Hayworth sings Put the Blame on Mame. Breakfast at Tiffany's: Audrey Hepburn sings Moon River. And both are delightful.

Rita Hayworth in Pal Joey:
(though the vocals are by Jo Ann Greer) |
From film Deliverance (dir. John Boorman, 1972):

I absentmindedly sing this to myself all the time while in the bathtub, which always manages to creep out my roommate.
(From the excellent 1961 horror film The Innocents) |
A few examples from Wings of Desire.

Everything from Bad Boy Bubby is gold.

Love this scene from one of Helge Schneider's movies.
