Yes, this. It's an excellent version, really the only cinematic version I have seen that would have me watching it as opposed to the 10th Anniversary Concert.

I'm familiar with Les Mis but I have not seen the film yet. I'm on it :)

So, I watched the 2012 film version of Les Miserables and while I can't say I was terribly moved (I'd heard tell of people crying buckets in the theaters), I did highly enjoy some parts and I think Hugh Jackman was wonderful as Jean Valjean. I did not like Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, sadly.

I wouldn't put it down as one of my top favorites but it is a very interesting musical (I'd seen some of it on Broadway) and I think the track I'll always love best is "Castle on a Cloud."

Although I don't care for the song, Anne Hathaway's performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" is kind of mind-blowing.



This song was also very good in the movie, especially as the ending sequence.



Overall it's a classic, but I can't say I recommend it as a movie. It's super long and I got bored a few times. Moreover, the songs, although deep and meaningful, are not catchy and don't stick with you for long. Still, here is a sampling of some poignant moments in this musical, which will probably never go away. :D

Little Shop of Horrors
 

A weird and hilarious musical from the 80s. It's actually kind of terrifying in a lot of ways, and yet, high schools continue to do this musical over and over again every year. I guess it has some timeless charm.

This song is the one I remember best. Steve Martin and Rick Moranis are kind of perfect.

Skid Row, yes. This song is the stuff of dreams, even though the beginning is kind of annoying and the white girl has a cat voice. I love the slice of life trope though. It really does paint a picture of life in the inner city. I lived that once. **** is real!



POOR! All my life I've always been poor...

This isn't one of the most well-loved songs of the movie but I so love the lyrics.

SWIM cried like crazy in the theatre watching Les Mis. Of course, he was on ecstasy, so that might have had something to do with it...

I've been really digging the work of Jacques Demy lately, as close to the joy of classic musicals as you can get but cooler because they're French. Les Demoiselles de Rochefort is just so much fun!

I love Little Shop of Horrors. I saw it on stage back in the 80s and it was amazing. Then I saw the movie and that was amazing. Then my high school did the play and I played Mr. Mushnik in it and that was... fun.

Have you ever you ever seen the old Roger Corman movie from 1960 that the stage play was based on? It's not as good as the play or the 80s movie (and it's not a musical), but its worth watching. It was filmed in less than three days, which is something I've always found pretty impressive.

As a huge fan of Les Mis, I must say, I wasn't a fan of the 2012 film version. Nor was I particularly a fan when I saw it on Broadway. I grew up with the original London cast recording, as well as the Original French Concept album, and the passion and enthusiasm present on both these is so clear. Whereas, when I saw it on Broadway (Oct 2014), there was no passion. It just seemed so day in, day out. And the Eponine (Nikki something?) was AWFUL. She was nasal, acted terribly and rushed 'On My Own'.

However, when I was in NYC, I did also see The Book of Mormon, which was WONDERFUL. Highly recommended if you're near Broadway.

As someone that doesn't usually like Musicals much.. I must say I really enjoyed Repo! The Genetic Opera. I think its because the music in it is not only really good, but really unique, and fits the theme of the movie perfectly. Most Musicals just seem to be "lets take this movie or book and turn it into something it isn't". So maybe the Musical experts could change my mind about that, because I don't think theres enough talk about Musicals despite the fact that it seems to be a better format for story telling than movies seem to be.
