The Monthly Themed Compilation Thread [MAY'S COMP AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD!]

http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/4491/comp2.png

Every month, participants submit songs to make a downloadable mix-tape.
These compilations are themed, based on the theme that gets the most votes by the poll's deadline.

HOW IT WORKS
On the first of every month, a voting round for the month's theme will begin. It will be held in this thread, and all the previous month's posts and votes will have been cleared. The voting round will start on the 1st of the month, and be closed on the 10th, and the winning theme will be announced. Submissions will then be accepted until the 20th. When the submission round reaches its deadline, the submissions will be arranged into a compilation and featured in the DOWNLOADS section of this post.

THEMES & VOTING
- You may request new themes to be added or removed in this thread at any time.
- Used themes will be removed when the poll is reloaded for the new month.
- Theme voting begins on the 1st of the month, and closes on the 10th.
- Votes are multiple choice.
- If you would like to change a vote, please let me know what you would like your vote changed from & to, prior to the poll's deadline. Requests will not be accepted after that time.

SUBMISSIONS
- Submissions will be accepted from the 10th until the 20th of each month. (This means that submissions will not be accepted on the 20th.)
- Although there are no limits or quotas for submissions, please keep the number of voters in mind when submitting and assume an average of 2 submissions per voter. If additions or reductions in song numbers become necessary for a particular compilation, there will be notification of that.
- Please label your submissions with at least the artist and song title.
- Please send only MP3s, 128kbps or higher.

Upload your songs to a file hosting service and PM the download links to:
Freebase Dali

I will not be hosting the guessing games for these compilations. If participants wish to play them on their own in this thread, they are welcome, and should remember to request anonymity when submitting their songs, otherwise their names will be credited in the download and in this thread.

There will be notifications of any changes or updates regarding these comps.

Apologies for taking so long to get this done, but I had family visiting recently and a bunch of other stuff happening, plus I'm ridiculously lazy. I hope this release is enjoyed nonetheless, even with the obvious lack of effort and concentration I put into it.

Ah, thank you very much. I was excited to hear this and it delivered IMO. I've heard it a handful of times so far today. I like the flow of the album, especially considering you say it was done hastily. Thank you very much...

Thanks man! Yea, I usually spend a couple days on the song order, but this one.. heh... I was already like a few days past my usual release timeframe so I got it done at once, but then realized I forgot to add 5 songs into the incoming folder (your 4 tracks were among them!) after I'd already positioned everything, adjusted levels, and exported, so I impatiently added them. I hope they're not too off, but I'm glad you say you enjoyed it! I was literally down to the upload stage when I realized it too. lol...

Downloading now... just curious, why do you use Megaupload? I find Mediafire a lot better, since it doesn't make you wait 45 seconds to download and doesn't limit you

Mrd00d 05-26-2011 02:48 PM

Agreed, although I notice they USED to use mediafire for the older comps. At least it's not rapidshare XD

45 seconds is an incredibly long time, how do you even wait that long?

Oh and Freebase you were supposed to get my second song from my collection for a better quality version of it but it's fine. I'll just link it to you instead next time.

It's just a minor annoyance to have to navigate away from the page, wait, come back, and THEN start the download. I'm just saying that mediafire doesn't make you do that, no need to be a dick

I'm just teasing....sorry if you took it the wrong way

Freebase Dali 05-26-2011 04:15 PM

I just use Megaupload because I've been using it and I have an account there and can manage everything I've uploaded. I guess I could do the same thing elsewhere, but it was just a matter of convenience for me. If it's that big of an issue, I can change it.

@ DJ, sorry about the song. I'm not sure I remember which song it was or why I didn't grab it up. I haven't seen anyone on SS for days, so I'm not sure.

oh okay, my bad anyways, I should have PM'ed you and told you to grab it and maybe I wasn't logged on when you were. It's okay.

Lesson learned for the future.

storymilo 05-26-2011 05:47 PM

It'd be cool if submitters could post the original artist of their song, cause I don't recognize all of these. Mine (The Feelies) is a Beatles cover (shocking).

djchameleon 05-26-2011 08:24 PM

I'm sure mines is pretty recognizable

The song that didn't make it into the comp that I also suggested was Holy Diver, with Dio's original version and then Killswitch Engage doing the cover.

Charlemagne 05-26-2011 09:59 PM

I have so many Bruce Springsteen covers on my computer...and I don't even like Bruce that much.

No, it's not a big deal at all, I was just wondering if there's some secret to Megaupload that I didn't know about :p:

RVCA 05-27-2011 12:00 AM

also, is it just me or did none of the track information get preserved? I'm staring at completely blank fields.

I was wondering if we were going to have a format with that info like for example: Tom Sawyer [Rush] - Mindless Self Indulgence...
but it didn't.
Very good idea for this comp. We can at least share it in the comp. info. and those who want to add it in manually on their copy can...

01 - Mattias IA Eklundh - Smoke On The Water [Mrd00d] (Deep Purple)

02 - Mindless Self Indulgence - Tom Sawyer [Mrd00d] (Rush)

03 - The Feelies - Everybody's Got Something To Hide [storymilo] (The Beatles)

04 - Cap'n Jazz - Take On Me [RVCA] (A-Ha)

05 - Half Japanese - Ball and Chain [dankrsta] (Big Mama Thornton)

06 - Tuxedomoon - Heard It Through the Grapevine [dankrsta] (Wanted to say Creedance, glad I looked it up: I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles recorded it first, but it's a staple of Marvin Gaye and really popularized by Creedance Clearwater Revival imo)

07 - Snakefinger - The Model [dankrsta] (Kraftwerk)

08 - The Residents - Blue Suede Shoes [dankrsta] Blue Suede Shoes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley)

09 - Mattias IA Eklundh - Minor Swing [Mrd00d] (Django Reinhardt)

10 - Disturbed - Land Of Confusion [djchameleon] (Genesis)

11 - Muse - Feeling Good [RVCA] Feeling Good - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Cy Grant for the musical "Roar of the Greasepaint - Smell of the Crowd"; Nina Simone has the most popular version it seems)

12 - Yellow Matter Custard - While My Guitar Gently Weeps [Mrd00d] (The Beatles)

13 - The Hold Steady - Atlantic City [Charlemagne] (Bruce Springsteen)

14 - Tegan and Sara - Dancing In The Dark [Charlemagne] (Bruce Springsteen)

15 - Arbouretum - The Highwayman [s_k] (Jimmy Webb)

16 - Nirvana - Oh Me [deadpoet] (Meat Puppets)

17 - Toots & the Maytals - Take Me Home, Country Roads [captaincaptain] (John Denver)

18 - Joe Cocker - With a Little Help From My Friends [deadpoet] (The Beatles)

None of the tags ever get preserved. I import all the songs into my music program and when I'm done ordering and making volume adjustments and all, I export them as .MP3s and re-tag them afterwards, prior to doing the artwork and compiling everything into the file to upload. The only difference with this one is I skipped the tagging part.

starrynight 05-27-2011 03:10 AM

People don't use download managers here? I'm not sitting in front of a webpage waiting for the seconds to tick down if I can avoid it lol. I use mipony, if there is a capture to fill in it just pops up on my screen when it is ready.

captaincaptain 05-27-2011 01:41 PM

Great cover art.

I believe the original one was by "Highwaymen".
A group that consisted of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson andKris Kristofferson. I thought theirs was the original one.

Mrd00d 05-27-2011 04:11 PM

I just google searched 'arbouretum highwayman cover' and got multiple pages saying Jimmy Webb and no mention of the Highwaymen...

starrynight 05-28-2011 02:59 AM

Re: Highwayman, Jimmy Webb did the first version. I've never thought it's one of his best songs though.

From this batch the Joe Cocker is the most famous, and of course well liked by most.

Cap'n Jazz's punky Take on Me is the most interesting new one in here for me. Another good punk cover is the UK Subs version of She's Not There.

Snakefinger's The Model is ok, if not that different from the original.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps is ok, though the vocal part isn't really as good as the guitar section.
