I was going to suggest Get Hurt by No Age but I'll have to upload it to youtube. Not that I strongly disagree with Japanther but I feel there could be a better fit since I feel the tracks more on the garage rock side.

someonecompletelyrandom 09-24-2010 12:26 PM

All are added and Indie Rock has officially been changed from Sonic Youth to Dinosaur Jr. Thanks for the submissions, keep em coming!

No need to upload to YouTube. Let me clarify that as long as I can go back and find the song later (i.e. it isn't a song your friend recorded and I can't get my hands on), all you need to post is the title and artist.

downwardspiral 09-24-2010 12:32 PM

Cocteau Twins - Little Spacey - Dream Pop
Mogwai - Christmas Steps - Post Rock
Bon Iver - re:stacks - Indie Folk
The Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again - Indie Pop

(will post links when I'm back home, can't access youtube in work)

Alright then,

No Age - Get Hurt - Noise Pop
Lightning Bolt - Saint Jacques - Noise Rock

someonecompletelyrandom 09-24-2010 12:42 PM

The spots for Noise Pop and Noise Rock are currently occupied by 'Radical Businessman' by Japanther and Sonic Youth - Stereo Sanctity respectively. I'll second you on changing Noise Rock to Lighting Bolt, but you'll have to get someone to back you up on Noise Pop or discuss it with Violent & Funky, who submitted it.

Hmm, that's interesting. I'm sure the term Noise Rock covers a great variety of bands and God Bullies are certainly one of them. But I don't agree that Sonic Youth is not because of their artistic approach. You mean their use of atonality and dissonance inspired by avant-garde music? Maybe better example in that case would be something from 'Confusion Is Sex'. I see Noise Rock as a scene that grew out of No Wave initially, but more importantly, to me noise in rock are not just distorted, dirty sounds, but atonality and dissonance also.

Maybe we should meet half way and suggest Big Black?

someonecompletelyrandom 09-24-2010 01:02 PM

^ Right now it's at Lightning Bolt. Which I think is a pretty good example because they're basically an extreme of their genre.

bob. 09-24-2010 01:07 PM

extreme is an understatement :)

actually i completely agree i guess what i was trying to say is that i feel Sonic Youth kind breaks out of typical "Noise Rock" and presents something more

someonecompletelyrandom 09-24-2010 01:13 PM

Added The Duprees - You Belong to Me to Doo-wop.

Fell in love with this song the first time I heard it. For doo-wop, it's hauntingly beautiful. Maybe it's just increased with the passage of time, but there's something subtly eerie about this tune.

James 09-24-2010 01:16 PM

Charles Mingus-Solo Dancer-Avant-Garde Jazz

dankrsta 09-24-2010 01:17 PM

OK, I agree with Lightning Bolt as THE Noise Rock

@Conan I guess you didn't see it, but I'll repeat my question from one of my previous posts: How the hell did Guided by Voices end up among sub genres of Avant-Garde?

bob. 09-24-2010 01:24 PM

Please Don't Talk To The Lifeguard - Diane Ray

i love this song....so playful and fun...and at the same time she's talking about drowning herself to get the attention of a boy

Crust Punk
Nausea - Smash Racism

so crust they haven't showered since the early 90s

i love that Duprees song....beautiful :)

James 09-24-2010 01:26 PM

Wikipedia lists Lo-Fi under their Avant-Garde category. In the context of Popular Music, this makes sense because Lo-Fi recordings are an asthetic. Under the Wikipedia's definition, Avant-Garde "may be used to refer to any other post-1945 tendency of modernist music not definable as experimental music".

Avant Garde will feature far more prominently in the Art Music portion of TUC, but as far as "popular genres" go, there aren't many that fall under this category. Confusing as hell, I know. I'm just going by what Wikipedia says because if I honestly tried to examine every genre in here for accuracy I might be on the computer for the rest of my life.

If you feel the current selection doesn't represent it's genre, however, feel free to suggest another.

Good Twee is shockingly awesome, but there is a lot of bad stuff.

Confusing indeed. I just find it hilarious that representatives for Avant-Garde are John Cage, Terry Riley and...Guided by Voices.

Here's Avant-Garde music Wikipedia page (no mention of lo-fi) Avant-garde music

And here's Lo-fi : Lo-fi music
I would suggest putting lo-fi into the Rock section. Also, I didn't realize this compilation is for popular genres only, for now. Then Avant-Garde section basically represents those explorations that had a big influence on popular music. So, minimalism and experimental music are fitting. I would also suggest Drone and Noise for the Avant-Garde sub genres.

bob. 09-24-2010 01:52 PM

one more :)

synthpop
Depeche Mode - Everything Counts

in my opinion one of the greatest songs ever written

someonecompletelyrandom 09-24-2010 01:55 PM

Added bob, nice choice!

Done and done. :) Any suggestions for those two? (just remember we already have a drone metal category so Sun 0))) or Earth would probably fit best in there).

I'd say Madvillain is a good representation of Alt. Hip Hop. Want me to add it?

Sure but which song?

bob. 09-24-2010 02:05 PM

noise = Whitehouse - Wriggle Like A Fucking Eel

although i think technically speaking they are considered the founders of "power electronics"

thanks Conan...i've seen Depeche Mode three times in my life and each time i burst into tears of joy when they play Everything Counts

For the Avant-Garde Drone I suggest La Monte Young (The Theatre Of Eternal Music) - Pre-Tortoise Dream Music

I put The Theatre Of Eternal Music along with La Monte Young because it was a group that consisted of La Monte Young, John Cale, Tony Conrad and others, but those compositions were later largely attributed to La Monte Young. So there's a bit of copyright confusion there.

dankrsta 09-24-2010 02:26 PM

I think Whitehouse is a better fit for power electronics as bob. said. So maybe that should go to Electronic section. But it sure is noise :)

For Noise maybe Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music or something from Merzbow. What does everybody think?

+81 09-24-2010 03:04 PM

I agree with Whitehouse being in Power Electronics over noise.

bob. 09-24-2010 03:08 PM

i agree and withdrawal my submission

Whitehouse is a huge leap from what i think anybody would call Avant-garde

but i think that maybe Nurse With Wound over Lou Reed

especially any of the tracks from "Chance Meeting..."

like Six Buttons of Sex Appeal?

Dayvan Cowboy 09-24-2010 03:09 PM

For Drone:
Candlegoat - Sunn O)))

The intro = god.

I'll definitely second Nurse With Wound for Avant-Garde.

You totally just ninja'd my Oren Ambarchi - Corkscrew suggestion! I'll survive though since Sunn O))) are a great choice.

bob. 09-24-2010 03:16 PM

Doom Metal
Asunder - Twilght Amaranthine

may your hair guide you through the darkness at this the worlds end

dankrsta 09-24-2010 03:18 PM

Nurse With Wound is tempting, but I think there's too much structure there for pure Noise

For Noise I suggest Merzbow - Woodpecker No 1

+81 09-24-2010 03:22 PM

Trip-Hop

Emancipator - Smoke Signals
