Blue Foundation - "Eyes on Fire"
When I watched "Twilight," one song in the soundtrack (besides Supermassive Black Hole!) stuck in my mind, haunting me a little. The movie only uses the beginning portion of this song, which is my favorite part. It features a grungy-sounding guitar and the singer's ethereal "aahing." That portion made me curious enough about the rest of the song to track it down by reading about the Twilight (2008) soundtrack. I learned that Blue Foundation is a Danish band that once included Kirstine Stubbe Teglbjærg, who I assume is the singer in the official song video (below). The video for "Eyes on Fire" is interesting to me because it shows a classically trained ballet dancer using a fraction of her skills to do dancing in a club in depressing-looking Chelyabinsk, a city I'd never heard about before: Quote:
The beginning of the song, the part I like, makes me feel as if it is about repressed emotions and something longed for, such that the situation as it is isn't quite right. I like this non-verbal part best. After reading the lyrics for the song, I realize the song is about chilly and aggressive self-protection, which causes the video to make more sense to me: Now I plan to look up the dancer, Masha Greif ... ... All I learned is that "Masha Greif is one of the best dancers in Russia and winner of The Golden Mask dance prize 2007 in Moscow." Lindsey Buckingham - "Holiday Road"
I was thinking of how amusing Chevy Chase is in those "Vacation" movies like "European Vacation," when I remembered that I always liked the happy theme song, which cheers me up when I hear it. So I looked up the song and learned it is by Lindsey Buckingham. And when I looked up Lindsey Buckingham (Lindsey Buckingham - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), I learned he "is an American guitarist, singer, composer and producer, most notable for being the guitarist and male lead singer of the musical group Fleetwood Mac." I had no idea that the song I liked from the Vacation movies was by someone who was an important part of Fleetwood Mac! This song makes me curious about others by him. I discovered Mulatu Astatke whilst watching Broken Flowers. Great film and great musician, victory all round.

While listening through a few songs by Lindsey Buckingham to find some off the album "Go Insane," I stumbled on the following song by him, "Time Precious Time." The song struck me with its rapid acoustic guitar playing. The speed of the acoustic guitar creates the sense of time rushing by and serves almost as a foil for the meaning of the song, which encourages listeners to take all the time they want. "The Devil's Right Hand" (1986)
Written by Steve Earle and performed by Waylon Jennings ...an upbeat yet sad Country song I first heard in one of my favorite movies, "Betrayed" (1988), with Debra Winger and Tom Beringer. Waylon Jennings "The Devil's Right Hand" - YouTube I love how this song is used at the end of the movie when it is paired with a final scene of hope: a little girl refuses to take her grandma's hand and, instead of doing so, waves her free right hand back at Kathy (Debra) because of their bond of love, a love that hopefully will save the little girl from following the path her devilish family members took. The song's use at the end of the movie is cleverly ironic, because the little girl's right hand is the opposite of the devil's right hand. It's also a very good anti-gun song, so I bet gun supporters would hate it...yet another reason I like it. :D As for the song itself, I love the rhythm guitar, the full sound, and the clever way the lyrics tell the story of a man's demise due to his trigger-happy affection for guns: Quote:

Because THIS DAMN SONG played in the middle, and at the end. And it has not left my head since. It's was playing after. It was playing at lunch. It was playing all night at work. And now I am sitting here listening to jazz and it IS STILL PLAYING IN MY HEAD. I need some death metal to get rid of this, I think. |
I think I posted this elsewhere, If I did apologies. From the magnificent Drive soundtrack:

I liked these two depressing songs, especially the first, that I noticed while watching the vampire love saga, "New Moon":
Grizzly Bear with Victoria Legrand - "Slow Life" (I mentioned this song in another post, but I like it enough to mention twice) Grizzly Bear - Slow Life - 2009 (Ft. Victoria Legrand) - YouTube * * * * * "Possibility" by Lykke Li Lykke Li's voice half-annoys me, but the line, "There's a possibility that all I had was all I gon get," is a great one, because eventually this isn't just a possibility...it is the hard truth, and one we all have to face sooner or later. I mean, hey, even immortal vampires can die when they get their heads and arms ripped off, transforming them into broken statues. :( Oh cruel, cruel vampire world!!! Possibility - Lykke Li (lyrics) - YouTube ^ This reminds me that a couple days ago I was discussing with my child what would happen if one were an immortal human and unable to be injured or need food to survive. We concluded that after the Sun expands, consuming the earth and eventually turning into a dead star, we'd end up just floating around in space for eternity, if we didn't move anywhere. We decided that we'd spend that time slowly puffing out thin space "air" to propel ourselves to the nearest inhabited planet. It would be boring, a trillion years of puffing through space like that, but we'd have all the time we'd need. This is one reason that it is better to die than to be immortal. :p: |
Latika's Theme -- from Slumdog Millionaire
A relaxing piece from a compelling movie. The song's humming reminds me of the way we often hum absentmindedly while daydreaming and doing some activity like washing dishes or taking a walk. latika's theme - YouTube |
Yea True Blood scene music is mostly rockabilly blues. Not anything too great but can understand how it appeals to the audience.
I like the show either way. |
