Sorry to complain tore, but my stuff should have been labeled under the artist name 'Space is the Place', not 'PlusEightyOne'. Also one of my tracks was not included, my favorite one.

quite stoked for this, wasn't expecting to be the lead off on the compilation though haha i'll be randomizing the list before playing it through so i get more variety. kind of disappointed there's nothing by Guitar Bizarre or Daktari, though i don't think they venture out of the instrument forum much.
so here's my write up for my own material i meant to edit the band titles a bit before submitting but whatever. first a note about my 'band' - we were never a serious group, unlike most groups who say they don't want to be famous because it's not cool to own up to wanting mainstream success, we didn't want to be famous because of a long personal story about my paternal family. so our focus was completely improvised cathartic releases. Jef (the one F) is my most consistent bandmate, he's the drummer and vocalists on all tracks. Evan (the Hooligan) is primarily a bass player that i met in school and the first person to crack my head to the possibilities afforded by improvised music. Saving and Enslaving the World - the original track is 13 minutes long, this snippet cuts the meandering start bit before we find our groove. it's from 2006, figuring September-ish. the Hooligan has a job in the adult education field and couldn't make it that night so it's a guitar and drum jam. i remember feeling very Adrian Utley on this jam and trying to channel the tone and feel he had on Portishead's 'Mysterons' from their Live in NYC album. i remember trying to use the intensity of the volume of my guitar to reflect the cool smoothness of being saved with the harsh abrasiveness of being enslaved. the unsung hero to our 'band' adds a layer of ambiance to the track with a few pedals his DS and Electroplankton for the xylophone / underwater bass sounds. Sail to the Sun - thinking this is from early 2007. our normal jams usually revolved around us taking turns on various instruments, this is one where i play my fretless bass and the Hooligan is having his way with one of my guitars. this is one of our 'standout' improvs because of Jef's vocal intensity. it was rare for him to find a beat to play where his brain would allow him to project an idea that clearly. normally he would be drowned by the volume in the room, somehow we all provided enough space. i'm definitely trying to channel Soundgarden's 'Applebite' on this one. the jam went on for a few minutes longer but we devolve into silliness and totally lose our groove. Rather warm, but, it's wet. - it's about a jug of water, and from about 2002. we used to jam in the F's parent's basement when we first started hanging out and there would always be half full 4L jugs of water around the room, usually close to the drummer. the synth in the background was our other 3rd guy at the time, sounds like his first Korg. i think it makes for a great funky interlude bit hehe. i'll give the other tracks a listen and comment later Last edited by mr dave; 06-21-2010 at 05:41 PM. |

alright. so i'm powered up and the headphones are snug. time to review this comp i'm skipping my stuff for obvious reasons (apologies for the quality for those with stylistically sensitive ears).
first up - Unchained Ballad. honestly, i'm expecting Righteous Brothers type stuff hehe. Somber - nice little atmospheric guitar piece. fitting title. reminds me a whole lot of something near the end when it speeds up but i can't put my finger on it. the Wanderer - more trippy atmospheric guitar stuff, the vocals are pretty hidden but it seems appropriate for this style. Whale - actual singing over the trippy guitar. i'd call this one the best of the bunch. quite happy to be proven wrong about the Righteous Brothers angle haha next - the man himself, Tore... Los Caballeros Del San Mondell - very theatrical. i quite like the whole deal, only thing missing is a trumpet but you can't win them all hehe. Flammenes Regent - about as far away as you can get from the previous track. how did you guys not end up giving the Prodigy a run for their money when they were starting out? +81 now the coral sea - glad i'm not the only super lo-fi here sounds like what one of my old roommates' used to make. the outro is way more awesome than the intro. don't take this the wrong way, but there's an old saying - if you screw up, play again so people think you meant it. i kept expecting to hear the half notes in the keyboard bit to repeat somewhere in there. Blood & Milk - WTF Macho Man? haha but not a single 'oooOOOOO YEAH'? weird. really liked the middle part though. Stone Birds' turn A Breeze on the Sea - this is the 'right' one. very 'Spritiualized', very awesome. the vocal overdubs get a little distracting near the end though. Flying Machines - bowing your guitar is fun and all (and looks super cool when you Jimmy Page it up) but the rosin makes a mess of the strings wasn't really expecting the aggression at that spot around 2/3rds. Savior - by making sure to say it's 'not' a religious song you make it impossible to consider it without the subject in mind. Janszoon (i always have to double check the spelling hehehe) Boardroom - very Trans Am but groovier. i dig. Mega-Awesome Dragon - i'm hearing Mouse on Mars through this one and that's definitely not a bad thing. then the trumpet takes it to a whole other place on top of that. awesome. ...and, this is long and i'm running out of things to say and i'm too hungry to do a 12 minute tune justice so i'll save them for tomorrow or something. |

Me and my friends, instead of having one band and doing whatever in that, we had an incredible number of band projects going at the same time so we'd basically make songs either for the different projects or we'd simply make a song and say "Hm, this one would fit that band". Our western tune and the industrial techno is very far apart stylistically, but not really in time and it's just a way of working that I like a lot. I find it so much easier to be creative within some form of framework or concept. All our bands have rather strict concepts and criteria that a song should pass before it's "allowed". I'd put something more recent on the comp, but the only one of those old bands that's really active today and the last few years (by active I mean we play gigs and stuff) is a folk/shanty group called Gladlaksene and it's very much guitar and sing-along-songs inspired by the marine culture down south. It's brilliant (I think) when you play it live for an audience, but we never were very ambitious with recording stuff with that band. As such, the songs on the comp are a poor representation of what I'm currently up to when it comes to music. When I'm done with the tough demands from my working day, I'll delve deeper into the comp and provide some more comments
