Another rough characteristic of ambient music is that it doesn't demand your attention. If you don't devote your attention to it, it should be easily "ignorable" unless at very high volume as it sort of provides or flavours the audible background in your environment. Of course that doesn't mean it shouldn't be unnoticeable or boring!

Beyond this simple description, whether or not a slice of music is ambient or not is largely up to you. Find a couple of tracks and send them my way.
