e.g. Porcupine Tree - can any of their songs be defined as hits? And if you are new to a band how do you find a bands "hits"? Edit... I suppose you can search by most popular.... |

Exactly!
Take artists like Tom Waits or Frank Zappa for example. A lot of their less popular songs aren't on youtube, and chances are short of getting hold of their entire discography piece by piece, this thread's the best way to hear their more obscure stuff - stuff that the fans think is just as, if not more noteworthy than their more well-known work. I can see what angle you're coming from, but youtube's one of the sites I use to get an idea of what an artist's like. These mixes come in handy if I feel like hearing more. Certainly nothing remotely pretentious about making them. |

I do still feel there needs to be a certain element of "hits" in there though.... |

I can see the angle you're coming from, but at the end of the day these are all, of course, fan-made and not record company-made comps, so I'm just saying it's more or less a given that the hits won't exactly play a huge part in many of them. Sorry if it seemed like I having a go - that wasn't my intention at all. |

I guess probably not. I would like to listen to it
And about compilations for beginners... If I can say my own opinion, for me ideal compilation is both versions together - some "catchy" songs and also some harder to get into. I know some other songs can be often better than big hits but on the other hand it's good to have in compilation both types of songs. |
