You know there are actual compilations that exist, what would be the point to seeing all their singles that charted? Seems like it would take the fun out of it for me.

The Beginner's Guide to Rasputina

Rasputina is a cello-driven band that is very difficult to classify.
They call themselves "cello rock", which seems appropriate enough.
Band members are prone to dress up in Victorian-era clothing, and their peculiar songs often have a historical twist.
Melora Creager writes and sings (with a wonderfully warbally voice). Her sense of humor is very odd.
Their music is dark, heavy, and bizarre. I absolutely love it.

A simple formula was used in making this compilation: I chose my two favorite tracks from each of their releases. They are presented chronolotically.

You are not alone!

A beginners guide should have the most accesible work from all parts of an artists career.

e.g. If i were to do a Muse comp, most of the songs that would be included, would not be in my top 20 muse songs, but it would be the more "catchy stuff" from the different parts of the career. I might include a few other songs to show what they can do, but I would stay with around 80% accessible.

as others have argued, if you want to hear the band's singles, then go download their greatest hits album. this thread is to help people learn about a band through the ears of a true fan, rather than through the pocket of a record company.

How many of the bands covered here actually have greatest hits albums?

Kind of irrelevant considering the existence of stuff like youtube, dailymotion, grooveshark, spotify or anywhere else you can hear all their hits for free with minimum fuss anyway.
