I made this mix few days ago for 8tracks, but inspired by Big Four Bands Thread decided to post it here too. Like I said there, I see freak folk genre as a modern scene influenced by 60s psychedelic jams, especially by more out there freak-outs (Red Krayola, Cromagnon, for example); Sun City Girls/Sir Richard Bishop brand of primitivism; and minimalism/drone of La Monte Young, Tony Conrad, Terry Riley etc...

I didn't make this playlist to be a beginner's guide, but it can serve as one. The mix is more oriented toward mystical, pagan side of freak folk (like being alone in the dark wood). It's interesting to compare it to neo-folk, which is, with its ties to early industrial, drenched in occult; this on the other side is swimming in 'primitive' ritual.

Many thanks for your compilation, which I have downloaded but not listened to yet. I only recognised one name from the bands you listed and obviously know less about Freak Folk than I imagined. oops!

Well, like I said, this mix was made to embody a certain vibe and theme. For a proper beginner's guide I would've probably added some other acts, like Six Organs of Admittance, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Jackie-O Motherfucker, Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice, No-Neck Blues Band etc. I would've basically started with New Weird America movement and then gone from there (ah well, now I have a motivation...).

After all terms free folk and freak folk were born out of that movement, and were (and I think still are) pretty much interchangeable. There were also names like new folk and wyrd folk. (I see them less now though). People can make a distinction, like free folk uses improvisation, drone and general avangarde to deconstruct folk, but to me it's not really necessary, because that's what freak-folk also implies. (I mean in the 60s, more structured songs and epic improvisational jams were all called psychedelic rock)

Term freak-folk maybe gained more traction later especially after it started incorporating more pop, song oriented, commercially attractive folk until it pretty much devolved into generic indie folk (like it always does). I like to think that this mix (and another one I'll make) is emphasizing 'freak' in the folk.

What's amazing is that I made this thread almost ten years ago now, it was obviously one of my first ones, as I joined originally in 2008 and kept pretty much to my journal for a long time, so once I ventured out into the wild as it were I would have mostly just contributed to threads. This therefore, given the date, must have been one of the first I created, and so well received at the time.

This thread and The 10 Track Mixtape Thread used to be fantastic resources for discovering new music, in the days before Turntable and Plug became really popular.

I think the creation of the Soundtracks & Compilations sub-forum killed these two threads the most. From what I remember they used to be stickied in the General Music forum, but now they lie in here forgotten about. It will probably take a lot to get this thread flowing again but I'd love to put together a few more beginner's guides.
