Forgot we actually had this thread. I played about 20 hours of FTL over the last few days and I am absolutely in love with the soundtrack. So gentle and relaxing, while still being engaging. It also changes if you're in a combat situation so you can get a little more action-based and exciting. Either way though, this is an electronic soundtrack not to be missed.

I'm really starting to notice a trend of impressive video game soundtracks within the indie gaming scene. 2011 brought us The Bastion soundtrack, a great collection of electronic, acoustic, and Middle Eastern influenced sounds. 2012 brought the beautiful neo-classical sounds of the Journey soundtrack, the dreamy soundscape of the Botanicula soundtrack by DVA, or the deranged snyth dance songs off the Hotline Miami soundtrack.

Did you ever play Dust: An Elysian Trail? not only is it an excellent Metroidvania style action adventure game, it also had a really really amazing soundtrack! I'm pretty sure it all was from the mind of one dude, he got help but most of the work was from him. It was a pretty charming game that had a deep combat system and was really fun to play.

As for other all time fave VG OSTs, Baten Kaitos would definitely be in the top tier among them. The games music had such a enchanting and mesmerizing vibe. Motoi Sakuraba really let it all out in these games, the music changed the whole atmosphere of the game. He had thought provoking melodies for the tear jerking moments, rocking guitar solos for the battle segments and even spacey jazz style arrangements. This games OST is all over the place and I love every minute of it.

Omg I'm so sorry I didn't realize you replied before. Thanks for the answer. Okay, well if you don't know I'll certainly look it up on wikipedia. In any case, could you recommend me a few more of Mitsuda's best tracks? I loooooove it.

And its not that I didn't like X's soundtrack, I just really dug the psone era games a lot more so those songs are really etched in my brain haha. "To Zanarkand" is definitely one of the series best songs though, such a beautiful tune.
Yeah, I guess I was too young for all that, after all. I didn't get my first console until 2002. =D No video games until we were 13 at my house. Probably a good parenting tactic really.

You should listen to this guy lonlonjp; he does a whole bunch of acousic covers of video game songs. Really gifted guitarist
Wow, I liked it, it kinda gives the song a flamenco or Southern Spain twist, never thought of it like that before, though...

Thanks again for the reply, P.D.Dude.

Haha it's all good, and as far as more of Mitsuda's best I could honestly recommend listening to all of the Chrono Trigger/Cross OST's which was his best work in my opinion. He likes to use similar keys and even melodies sometimes in a few different songs so when you listen to the album as a whole the songs are kind of like a story book, it's amazing. It's some of the most beautifully arranged music I ever heard! But for some picks of more favorite tracks...

This song gets me so pumped once the song really hits

the original 16 bit version is still pretty epic, but Lonlonjp version is ridiculicious

Pokey Means Business: Earthbound Music - YouTube
Earthbound is by far my favourite game and the music if funky, varied and it sticks with you for a long time. This song plays when you're fighting the final boss and is easily one of the greatest video game songs ever. The Winters theme is up there too.Not to mention that when you progress in the battle some of the freakiest music ever plays:

Giygas Is Wounded Extended - YouTube

the next soundtrack I should mention is the pokemon G/S soundtrack. Sure, I'll admit that it's simplistic and 4 bit soundcards don't sound very well, but as a kid, some of the more emotional tracks literally brought a tear to my eye.

Pokemon Silver/Gold/Crystal - Ecruteak City/Cianwood City - YouTube

Pokemon Silver/Gold/Crystal - Surf Theme - YouTube

I'm very passionate about vidya game music, so expect me to be here a lot.

My Fav would have to be the Red Dead Redemption sound track, both the RDR and the Zombie RDR.

Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3...scored by Harry Gregson-Williams.

The man's friggin' brillliant. Same goes for his part in COD 4.

Ken's music on Street Fighter II. Lots of bands have been playing that music. Double Dragon's last battle music is also moving.

When I was in high school I found a CD of the Banjo-Kazooie 64 soundtrack & my little brother & I would drove around the city picking up chicks, smoking Marlboro Reds, & blasting "Bubblegloop Swamp" ...
