Best Film Score

Hey, I was wondering what everyone thought was the best film score they've heard?

NOTE: The difference between soundtrack and score, a la Wiki:
Quote:

The term film score is frequently synonymous with film soundtrack, though a soundtrack may also include the songs used in the film while the score does not. A score is sometimes written specifically to accompany a film, but may also be compiled from previously written musical compositions.

Firstly, cool thread idea.
Hmm.. having trouble thinking of scores, but for themes the first that spring to mind are 'Get Carter' and 'Seven Samurai'... I think people underestimate how a film can live or die on it's score and general soundtrack - 'Alien' ofcourse had everything in place to make it unforgettable.

More recently Jonny Greenwood's score for 'There Will Be Blood' really took me aback. 'Ghost Dog' had a great hip hop score.

I just have no love for the generic 64-piece orchestra John Williams epic blockbuster toss - and every other large scale release these days seems to have doomy choirs.

I still really like the Gladiator score. Hans Zimmer is fairly refreshing.

And I finally got to hear There Will Be Blood, it's pretty awesome. I wonder why he never got to do that kind of stuff with Radiohead?

Molecules 07-09-2008 11:12 AM

i don't know but each forthcoming 'head release should have a crowd-pleasing side and a Jonny side. Gladiator definitely ticked all the requisite boxes for that genre..

Jerry Goldsmith was by far the most diverse and interesting of the big Hollywood composers imo, he passed away a few years ago. Jerry Goldsmith - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

All 3 Episode, Love 'em

Beautifully composed by Hans Zimmer the great !.!.!.!

By the way, I'm newbie to this community. I need a warm welcome............lol
Just kidding

Philip Glass's score to The Hours is the best I've ever heard by far.

Mine are in this thread:

I said it on another thread, but Amelie is my favorite, if you've seen it you'll understand, if not, then go see it right now. I don't care that's it's french and you have to watch it with subtitles, it's the best movie ever made, haha.

I really loved the percussive parts that built tension, but what the hell was with the cheesy horror movie strings????

they were cacophonous and unsettling to me, it wasn't exactly Psycho

I can't think of a Kubrick movie with a bad score - Shining, Full Metal Jacket (the final scene, what sounds like a heavy table being scraped across the floor of an amphitheatre), Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut (the scene where Cruise is being stalked to at creepy two-note piano phrase)

The soundtrack to No Country For Old Men was pretty interesting.

Feign 02-26-2009 09:41 PM

I still need to see No Country for Old Men.. I hope you mean interesting in a good way, haha.

Surell 02-26-2009 09:44 PM

So a score can use songs already written? Regardless, I'd say There Will Be Blood's score is my very favorite. If it counts.

Wiki quote:
'Unusual for a thriller, the Coens worked against Hollywood convention and minimized the score used in the film, leaving large sections devoid of music. The concept was Ethan's, who persuaded a skeptical Joel to go with that idea. There is some music in the movie, scored by the Coens' longtime composer, Carter Burwell, but after finding that "most musical instruments didn’t fit with the minimalist sound sculpture he had in mind [...] he used singing bowls, standing metal bells traditionally employed in Buddhist meditation practice that produce a sustained tone when rubbed." The movie contains a "mere" 16 minutes of music, with several of those in the end credits. The music in the trailer was called "Diabolic Clockwork" by Two Steps From Hell. Sound editing and effects were provided by another longtime Coens collaborator, Skip Lievsay, who used a mixture of emphatic sounds (gun shots) and ambient noise (engine noise, prairie winds) in the mix. The cattle gun used by Chigurh was in fact voiced by a pneumatic nail gun.'

That does sound interesting, haha. Now I'm excited to see it (to Netflix!)

Terrible Lizard 02-27-2009 05:28 PM

This is my personal favorite.
The first part anyway.

After some thinking, I'm going to go with The Fountain. It includes: Clint Mansell (who also did the score for Requiem for a Dream), Mogwai, and Kronos Quartet.

FaSho 03-29-2009 06:39 AM

Joe Hisaishi's score for Princess Mononoke FTW

Sodacake 04-06-2009 03:04 PM

The Piano, in my opinion, has the best score of any film I have ever seen/any score I have heard.

Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo

"The Mission" by Ennio Morricone

Scarlett O'Hara 04-24-2009 02:00 AM

The Forest Gump Soundtrack. :D

[Paranoid.Android] 04-24-2009 10:01 PM

I personally loved Hans Zimmer's score for The Dark Knight, but my absolute favorite would have to be The Dust Brothers' score to Fight Club.

Anthony 06-27-2009 09:00 PM

Almost anything by Michael Nyman

Astronomer 06-27-2009 09:24 PM

Anything by John Williams. Cliche, but his scores are just awesome.

Gone Sugaring 06-27-2009 09:26 PM

I absolutely love Henry Mancini's score for Experiment In Terror, definitely my favorite.

Astronomer 07-05-2009 07:10 PM

Okay this is definitely not the BEST film score, but I was surprised to really enjoy the Transformer's film score (NOT the soundtrack, Linkin Park, ew) but the actual score. I thought it was really fitting. Conducted by Steve Jablonsky, I think. Anyway, I really enjoyed it :)

Yeah they did actually didn't they! I heard Chester's vocals in a few parts and I assume the other members contributed. But I thought the orchestral part of the score was very great and one of the things I enjoyed most.

Also I was mainly ew-ing that song at the end.

djchameleon 07-05-2009 07:38 PM

oh New Divide? I like it but then again....I'm a die hard LP fan so...yeah lol
