gunnels presents...
An Alternative Guide to...

Angst
That annoying mixed emotion of resentment, anger, and sadness all wrapped up into one that suddenly invaded your life once you turned 13. A lot of music has been written with this emotion as the driving force. Some good, some (really) bad. This compilation focuses on the former variant. Like the title surmises, I tried to stray away from the obvious and notorious choices. Each track brings a new aspect of this immature emotion into play. From the pissed off "One-Armed Scissor" to the melancholy "Low Tide of the Night" to the just plain miserable "Two". Like an emo kid unwinding from a bad day at middle school, the comp starts off energetic and promptly winds down and collapses (until the last track).
Anyway, here's the tracklist:

Coheed and Cambria- "Delirium Trigger"
At the Drive-In- "One-Armed Scissor"
Silversun Pickups- "Future Foe Scenarios"
The Roots- "Walk Alone"
Everything But the Girl- "Low Tide of the Night"
Talk Talk- "I Don't Believe in You
The Antlers- "Two"
Nick Drake- "Things Behind the Sun"
Rodney Crowell- "Adam's Song"
Boris- "Farewell"
Now go cry, emo kid.

i woke up this morning and the first thought that entered my brain was that of Jhonn Balance....a beautiful and amazing person who was taken from the earth many years ago...so i wanted to pay tribute to him and the creative people he associated with....also thought i would create my own musical companion to the book about them

i start the comp with a track off of Coil's Autumn Equinox album....simply because that is today.....then i chose three track from each artist starting with their early works, to their mid-era, to their more recent sound....i feel it explores all three bands well especially if played in that order....i added a Bunny Hedge Monster as the album artwork

i hope some you download this and introduce yourself to these amazing artist whose combined discography is unbelievably long

enjoy

I make mixtapes all the time, usually the sets are up to 80 minutes and hence around 20 songs. I would like to post but is there any scope here? I need some advice really. Should I make two posts with 10 tracks in each?

Also I see a warning "SONG LISTS WITHOUT LINKS WILL BE DELETED"... but I don't see any links being posted?

J Church
A Tribute to the best band to have ever been named after a public transit route
*maybe the only band

It's Not My Imagination....There's Winnie The Pooh At My Back!!!!

My Favorite Place
Austins Shitty Limits
Panama
Without A Single Word
Ayn Rand Is Dead
Racked
My Favorite Phrase
No Doves Fly Here
You Shirt
Tide Of Fate

J Church was formed in 1992 in San Francisco out of the ashes of the pop punk band Cringer....singer/songwriter/guitarist Lance Hahn was the sole continuous member in the bands 15 years...which spawned 8 full length albums, 7 collection albums, numerous split albums, and honestly countless singles....more than just straight forward punk rock...J Church brought great song structure while somehow keeping within the "typical" pop-punk styling...lyrics ranging from cats, strife with city living, politics, and some reference to disease (Hahn died in 2007 after slipping into a coma due to complications with kidney dialysis)...i feel that J Church transgressed the "normal" 90's pop punk both lyrically and musically....and thus could be enjoyed by anybody who enjoys upbeat rock n roll with witty fun lyrics

Great list, this song absolutely ruins me.

"Every time I rise I see you falling, can you find me space inside your bleeding heart?"

This is more than 10 tracks.. cause while I made it I forgot it had to be 10 tracks. I guess you'll all have to deal with more amazingness than I should have put in.

CanwllCorfe - Cold is Coming

The Abbasi Brothers - Fragments of Memories as a Child
M. Ostermeier - Suspended
Le Lendemain - Lois
Amiina - What Are We Waiting For
Sven Weisemann - Xine XVIII Love in Vein
The Tallest Man on Earth - Where Do My Bluebirds Fly
The Echelon Effect - Debris
Arvo Pärt - Summa
Balmorhea - Bowsprit
John Metcalfe - Felt Unseen
Nils Frahm & Anne Müller - Teeth
Dné - My Vitamins
Frederik - Black Fur
Goddamn Electric Bill - Crossfire
Antony & The Johnsons - Hope There's Someone
Horse Feathers - Falling Through the Roof
Portland Cello Project - Nelson

I pretty much picked songs that felt "cold" or in my mind, fit with the Fall/Winter seasons. Everything from Ambient, to Folk, to Modern Classical. I tried not to make it overbearingly sombre, so I split it up with some dark songs, and some happy bright ones. While still, of course, sticking with the theme. Sooo ennnnjoy!
