Unable to categorize any of this but it's worth a try! I've listened to it a fair few times now and have enjoyed my time in the weirdo's corner, Demonoid is not of this parallel. Plenty of 'wtf' and 'huh' moments initially but as with anything that solicits an extreme reaction the mystery unravels after time. I would say that you could broadly define the music within as avant-prog (and all that encompasses) utilizing a random grab-bag of stylistic influences making for the opposite of a boring compilation.
1. Renaldo And The Loaf - Lime Jelly Grass Apparently signed to the Residents' Ralph Label, it sounds like them aswell. 2. John greaves & peter blegvad - Pipeline Weird proggy swing. Let's count how many times I can say 'weird' in this analysis. 3. Koenjihyakkei - Rattims Friezz Ah, the last.fm comparison of this Japanese group to Magma is well-earned, they remind me a lot of Frank Zappa's weirder jazz-classical detours aswell, good stuff! 4. Höyry kone - Huono Parturi I had to dig to find out they were Finnish. Strangely appealing, Magma-esque (but better) mixture of opera-tenor singing and progressive rock. Apart from the time sigs and tangential drumming I am starting to form a concrete template of 'weird', but not being musical couldn't tell you what that is. Is it using lots of flat and sharp notes and deviating from traditional modes? 5. Diablo Swing Orchestra - Poetic Pitbull Revolutions Black metal with Mexican (genre definition anybody?) horns, not bad, I don't usually go in for apocalyptic melodrama but this is more than bearable. 6. Alamaailman Vasarat - Kyyhylly Really loud, menacing contemporary Eastern European music, I was waiting for the metal guitars to kick in but they never came. I think the sinister edge came from the rock rhythm section underpinning otherwise traditional instruments. Why are they so angry?!!? 7. Etron Fou Leloublan - Christine I have been trying to pigeon-hole this without looking to the internet for guidance, and it's not really possible. It's just post-punk era experimental madness, quite in tune with the goth-y music of the time with the rhythm section in some passages. I swear there should be an avant-garde albums chart for all these lunatics? 8. God - Fucked This track continues to just scare me, I could never imagine having stuff like this on my iPod tbh, everything about it is confrontational. Doom, industrial, avant-metal, these are not friendly musics... Oh and another rule of weird would have to be throwing a horn section into arrangements you wouldn't normally associate them with. It's worked well on all these songs 9. Yat-Kha - Irik Chuduk I have been looking for some Mongolian throat singer music for a while, what genius that somebody decided to make one a frontman for their band. Classic example of taking something old and making it new, without pissing on a noble tradition 10. The Caretaker - cloudy, since you went away The first Caretaker albums are inspired by the ballroom scene from the Shining, it says, so I checked him out on wiki and whaddya know all his sh*t is available for free download! Loving this track especially, as it is just like an old waltz record as played through the Gramophone of the Dead. His other stuff is mostly darkly ambient crackly stuff, I like this especially as I am a fan of hauntology has nobody else been listening to this? Wise up you slovenly posters! Glad you liked it! A lot of this weirdness comes from the vocals...Höyry kone have little magma influences. Those violins/cellos are what makes them even more creepy. And The Caretaker - I wouldn't bother with their second release unless you're in the mood (other than a couple of tracks)...this entire 'dark ambient' thingy kind of bores me often. Thanks for listening to my crap anyways . |

ten covers that make garbanzo smile
i've never been good at throwing songs into a mix that flows nicely from start to finish. so instead, i've put together a collection of my ten favourite cover songs. hopefully most of you have never heard these before. enjoy! Axiom Funk - If 6 Was 9 (Hendrix) Bootsy Collins and Buckethead throw down on this classic Hendrix tune. it's very out of character for Bootsy - still funky, but slow and sinuous. i like it better than the original, and it's my favourite of all the tracks here. Eliza Lumley - Black Star (Radiohead) apparently she has a whole album of Radiohead covers, but i only know this one. jazzy piano, light percussion, lazy bass and a smattering of horns make this rendition delightful, but it's Lumley's syrupy lounge voice that really shines. Gary Jules - Mad World (Tears For Fears) just simple piano and Jules' slow, gray voice. it's a very melancholy rendition of this tune. the vocals are incredibly expressive. not one for regular listening, but excellent nonetheless. Horace Andy - Horse With No Name (America) covers are always more fun when they cross genre boundaries. i don't normally enjoy reggae, but i just can't get enough of this one. you may know Horace Andy from his work with Massive Attack. he has dozens of albums out; this (Mek It Burn) is the only one i've heard. Morcheeba - Summertime (Gershwin) i once found a website offering more than one thousand different covers of this tune. i'm partial to Morcheeba - love the trip-hop sounds and i can't get enough of Skye's voice, so this ends up being my favourite. Rasputina - Fire & Ice (Pat Benatar) this track is so much fun! any Rasputina fans will be thrown by the fact that Melora actually sings like a normal person in this, but that makes it all that much more special. it's very much in the spirit of the original. Rasputina - Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd) if you know Rasputina, you can already imagine how incredible this is. if you don't know them, just listen. they definitely do justice to this fantastic song. The Beautiful South - Don't Fear The Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult) this is classic Beautiful South. Heaton does his usual magic with the lead vocals, and Wheeler provides wonderful backup on the chorus. not much more to say. The Beautiful South - Rebel Prince (Rufus Wainwright) Heaton's unforgetable voice really brings this track to life. that man can sing! unfortunately Wheeler kind of mucks things up with her shoddy french accent later in the track, but it's still good fun. Tricky - Dear God (XTC) gone is the poppy sound of the original, replaced by typical Tricky flavours. Francavilla excels as usual, bringing her delicious accent to the table. her vocal track is underlain by a bed of Tricky's usual gravely vocals. fetch! My Present Top Ten Tracks
Considering many of who are confused by the music I listen to. Or intrigued by the sheer number of Asian artists that occupy my top lists on Last.fm I have compiled together a list of my current favourite songs from each of my top artists, just in case any of you want to have a listen at some great Asian music. 01. Koda Kumi (倖田來未) - Selfish (From the album 'secret') Download Here A hard-hitting, catchy, rock-based track that just leaves you ready to take on the world. Kumi really gives her all in this track, the sheer powerful emotion you can hear in her voice is outstanding and it's one of those tracks that hasn't managed to get boring, though I've played it so many times 02. Ayumi Hamasaki (浜崎あゆみ) - Rule (From the album 'NEXT LEVEL') Download Here Another very hard-hitting track. Not as catchy but just as rock-based. A complicated mix of guitars, percussion and impressives synths that blend perfectly together. Ayumi has never been one to underachieve when it comes to releasing good songs and with this new single, also being used as the new Dragonball Evolution international theme song, she's definately hit the mark again. 03. Ai Otsuka (大塚愛) - プラネタリウム (Planetarium) From the album 'Love Cook' Download Here Japan's most adorable solo singer hits a more serious note with this pop/rock track. Strangely haunting in a way that makes to sit and listen throughout the entire song. Her vocals are quite high-pitch in a way that is common within the Japanese pop/rock genre. But don't let the term 'pop/rock' throw you off into thinking she's some kind of Japanese version of Miley Cyrus, no way, for one this young girl writes her own lyrics and music, plus she does sing very well live. This song is one of her most popular songs and it's not hard to see why when you hear it. 04. BoA - BRAVE (From the album 'THE FACE') Download Here This Multi-lingual singer is a huge star in both of home-country of Korea and Japan, and she's soon to release her debut English album. I've chosen a Japanese song to show you and it's a somewhat mellow song in comparison to the first two songs on this list. That doesn't make it any less effective. The song is hard to place into a genre, I sure can't do it, though that's hardly rare within Asian music. A great song for any new listener of BoA. 05. A-mei (張惠妹) - Shei Yu Zheng Feng (From the album 'Maybe Tomorrow') Download Here Absolutely fantastic song and back into the hard-hitting power that is akin to the first two songs by Kumi and Ayumi. This song is a real mixture of different styles and techniques. The occasional choir pieces really add to the effect and it's just a generally fun, powerful song to listen to. Simply awesome. 06. Jolin Tsai (蔡依林) - Wan Mei (From the album 'Dancing Diva') Download Here One of Taiwan's most popular and influential singers, Jolin Tsai is in full force with this song. It's a very upbeat, fun song with some hidden rock-influences. Jolin's vocals are never bad to listen to and the occasional English that's thrown in here and there is fun to hear. I thought this little mix-tape could use some more upbeat songs, plus this is the song that really got me hooked on Jolin. 07. Utada Hikaru (宇多田ヒカル) - This is Love (From the album 'ULTRA BLUE') Download Here Another Bi-lingual singer, Utada is consistently compared to Ayumi, though they both sounds completely different to each other. Utada releases music both in English and Japanese and is going to be releasing her second English album soon. This song is primarily an upbeat pop track, but unlike Western pop music, Asian pop music is do much more complicated. It's blend of styles, techniques, beats and rhythms makes this type of pop a genre that is never boring to listen to. A very optimistic track indeed. 08. Lee Hyori (이효리) - E.M.M.M (From the album 'Dark Angel') Download Here This queen of the Korean music scene takes a turn from her usual RnB/Pop style to bring us an absolutely awesome rock/electronic-based track, showing everyone that it she's not just a one-trick pony. This song is catchy, upbeat and sexy and never ever boring. Plus, the title stand for Eeny, Meeny, Miney, Moe..... which just amuses me. 09. OLIVIA - できない (Dekinai; I Can't) (From the album 'synchronicity' Download Here OLIVIA is another bi-lingual singer/songwriter, but unlike Utada and BoA she is also mixed-race. She adds English into almost all of her songs, and has released fully English albums before. This song in particular, which is one of her older songs, has a driving pop/rock sound and it's strangely catchy in an unconventional type of way. Her music is primarily rock-based, but, like most Asian artists, she also holds the ability to make music of many different genres, and this track is no exception to that. 10. Koda Kumi (倖田來未) x misono - It's all Love! (From the single 'It's all Love!') Download Here I've decided to leave you all with another Koda Kumi track, but this time she'd paired up with her sister. It's another driving rock-based track, definately fun to listen to and as always the little English additions to the track are undeniably adorable. It's the first time Kumi and younger sister misono have teamed up and if this is the result I certainly they team up again in the future.
