This is a brilliant idea for a thread... Let's get people back on this!
Here is my 10 track offering<<< 1. She Says Good Morning - The Pretty Things From 'S.F. Sorrow', as a psychedelic listening experience this album is nearly unrivaled. Used to listen to this and be bitter. 2. That Man - The Fall Used to listen to this and be bitter. 3. Cuttin' Headz - Ol' Dirty Bastard/RZA From one of my favourite hip-hop albums, this track just epitomizes the genius of RZA's production, there was nothing like this before. It sounds like it was recorded on a four track with a sparse beat and a dusty piano sample. 4. I Can See You - Black Flag I read Henry Rollins' Black Flag tour diaries ('Get in the Van') and some of his compendiums and I have just related to him at various points in my life. Still a massively under-appreciated band I think, and 'In My Head', their last album, just marks the end of their progression as post-hardcore luminaries. This track makes me feel like a plaid-wearing teen in a D.C. suburb. Or something... 5. Kyrie Eleison - The Electric Prunes From the Prunes' sophomore effort, you may be able to tell by now that I am a psychedelia aficionado... but this really is amazing. Their second album was basically psych-reworkings of old hymns and Gregorian chants. Also known as 'that track off Easy Rider'. 6. Miss Know It All - Scientist Scientist learned production and dub from the originator, King Tubby. This track reminds me of when I first got some decent speakers a couple of years ago and would have the Trojan dub compilations on repeat pretty much all the time. Big up the soundsystem man dem... 7. The Killing - the Ragga Twins I can't remember who turned me onto the Ragga Twins' turn-of-the-last-decade electro/ragga/house LP classic, but it's one of my most cherished. 8. Rhythm and Gash - Tempa T Grime music pulled me out of the abyss about a year ago. Listening to the pirate radio stations, buying the cheap-as-chips mixtapes and learning the lingo... this was music with unbridled anger and funnily enough, alot of positivity. And it's OURS... grime owes alot more to UK garage/ragga/dancehall than hip-hop and it's just ****ing street level and I love it. 9. Love and Pride - King This sounds alot like the Associates, who were a much better New Wave act, but this clinical, 80's pop nugget was something I used to hear all the time. 10. Rudolf - Peyr (pronounced Theyr) Can't remember how I discovered this band, they were and Icelandic post-punk/new wave act operating in the early 80's. The tracks I have heard of this album, sung in English, are on fire but it's long since out of print. This track is an objective look at yer average German citizen in 1935. my depression playlist
1.That Joke isn't Funny Anymore-The Smiths "i've seen this happen in other peoples lives and now it's happening in mine!" 2.How Soon is Now?-The Smiths "I am the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar. I am the son and heir of nothing in particular." 3.Between The Bars- Elliott Smith "drink up one more time and i'll make you mine keep you apart deep in my heart separate from the rest where i like you the best" 4.Please Please Please, Let Me Get What I Want-The Smiths "Good times for a change. See, the luck I've had can make a good man turn bad. So please please please let me, let me, let me let me get what I want this time." 5.Love Will Tear us Apart- Joy Division "And resentment rides high, but emotions won't grow. And we're changing our ways, taking different roads. Then love, love will tears us apart again." 6.24hrs.- Joy Division So this is permanence, love's shattered pride? What once was innocent, turned on it's side. A cloud hangs over me, marks every move. Deep in the memory, of what once was love."

1. King Jammy - Slow Motion Dub.
Yes! This is quite excellent. Exactly what I would hope for. 2. Grand National - Going To Switch The Lights On. the juxtaposition definitely highlights the dub influence on this track (i can hear it, anyway) good, catchy song. reminds me a bit of dandy warhols 3. The Cranes - Bewildered. i do enjoy this type of music. need more by this band 4. Mount Eerie- No Flashlight. lol, mount eerie says it all. 5. Loop - Shot With A Diamond. i like loop, but not when i'm paying too much attention 6.The Stranglers - Threatened. "You want big fat bass lines?" Umm.. does a bear **** in the woods?! good track, but were the synths really necessary? 7. Bernard Herrman - Taxi Driver Theme elevator jazz, i prefer staircase jazz 8. The Toasters-Marlboro Man yeah, ska is fun 9. Tin Machine-Pretty Thing. pretty thing = pretty good 10. Nitzer Ebb-Fun To Be Had. i'm sure it's classic, it's also horrendously dated 11. Lisa Gerard-The Insider. another moody female vocalist piece, cool beans 12. Folk Implosion-Natural One. i expect more from lou barlow 13. Clayhill-Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want. wasn't fitting my mood so i skipped it 14. Roy Budd-Get Carter Theme. awesome 15. Graham Reynolds-Aphids. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY |

How delighted I was to get home, plug in and be greeted by a moon-based compilation. How did you have the patience to do this? It's actually helping my flu. Oh I just thought of a two-in-one! 'Bad Moon Rising' - Creedence and Sonic Youth?
1.Chuck Berry – Havana Moon Legendary opener. 2.Dead Kennedys – Moon Over Marin DK always had the best lyrics, and the singer wore washing-up gloves. Imagine that. Good tune, someone should do a compilation based on where all the hardcore bands went, musically, in the 80's. 3.Bauhaus – Honeymoon Croon Best thing I've heard all day. Makes me want to watch that film about lesbian vampires featuring David Bowie. 4.Echo & The Bunnymen – The Killing Moon Classic. Like regular Coke. 5.Big Star – Blue Moon I've met far too many people who didn't know what a Big Star was. 6.Nick Drake – Pink Moon In the UK Brad Pitt narrated a BBC radio documentary about Mr. Drake. I still don't have any albums, this must be rectified. 7.Bob Dylan – Moonshiner Yeah but he doesn't have tits does he? 8.The Doors – Moonlight Drive According to Wiki this song was partially responsible for bringing the Doors together, like aural glue. mmm. 9.Can – Moonshake Need to get the remastered SACD of this, really. Each Can album of the Suzuki era has a different vibe and Future Days is just Can taking off into the stratosphere. 10.Chrome – Blood on the Moon A slice of menacing post-punk instrumental doom. 11.Brian Eno / David Byrne – Moonlight in Glory So this is what they broke up the Talking Heads for? Really ahead of it's time. 12.My Bloody Valentine – Moon Song Where the hell is this track from? Like all the best MBV it feels like being smothered in your own dreams. 13.His Name is Alive – Blue Moon A very 4AD-esque take on the original. 14.Cat Power – Moonshiner Ah that's better, tits. 15.Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention – Concentration Moon This is so good. Could pass for an R.Stevie Moore song... 16.Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band – Moonlight in Vermont This is what I signed up for with Beefheart really. It's those moments like at the end of this track where he really flexes his vocal muscles that send shivers down the spine. There seems to have been a backlash of people saying that Trout Mask is just ****, to them I say 17.Television – Marquee Moon Hot ****. Still the best song on that album right? 18.Explosions in the Sky – The Moon is Down Explosions in the Sky are useless to me, with my complete lack of musical subtlety. I own 'the Earth is not a cold dead place' and I hate them so much. Sorry. 'Hey man chill out and read a magazine, drink some coffee, it's all good' **** OFF 19.The Kronos Quartet – Half Wolf Dances Mad in Moonlight This gave me the fear, but I loved it. Restored my faith in music after track 18. Apparently they've done a version of Marquee Moon... 20.Tod Dockstader – Two Moons of Quartermass, First Moon Nothing like a bit of avant-garde electronica. I recommend Bruce Haack in this vein. Wasn't Quatermass a Philip K.**** thing? |
