Default What (Soul/R&B) Are You Listening To Right Now?

Post whatever soul/R&B music has intrigued you lately.

This track just came on my shuffle -

Get Off - Patrice Rushen

Now (1984, Elektra)

Pianist, Rushen, hasn't done a straight ahead R&B album in decades. But this is a good one. Laid-back, soft funk R&B with some jazz overtones on the slow tracks. Not sure if she'll ever return to the format after her disenchantment with the hit-centered nature of the pop music world. But she has great musical chops and then some.

Toni Braxton, Toni Braxton (1993, LaFace/Arista) YT Playlist

Secrets is my favorite from Braxton but this what you might have expected from a label looking to break through with a singer that would have popular R&B appeal. She'd get more interesting as she matured, thankfully. Not a bad throwback, though. Good to hear again.

Did you know that Will Smith sampled her "Forget me nots" for "Men in Black"?

I recently "discovered" this song:

Oliver Cheatham - Get Down Saturday Night (1983)

And I like it.

Soul and other parts of pop culture are the few things Americans can be proud of.

Jazz, Baseball, The Constitution...
Lots to admire about America.

Yeah, Forget Me Nots has been sampled many times. Rushen is known for having produced some great ones.
