Sam Cooke-the king of soul

I haven't seen a post about the king of soul. Maybe I overlooked it.

We can start with Sam Cooke Live at the Copa

Sam Cooke's kind of decent, I guess. He had a pretty good run in the early sixties. Bring It On Home To Me is a fantastic track and his Night Beat album, a year later, isn't bad. He probably isn't all that high on my favorite artists list but he's certainly a cool artist to get into.

It's been inactive since 2012 but there is a Sam Cooke thread here...

Indeed

My favorite is A Change is Gonna Come

You can hear how pioneering he was transitioning from that 50’s pop sound to the more soulful sounds that came after his early death in 64.

His death is pretty interesting. The most likely story is he brought a hooker back to the hotel, ****ed her, went for a piss, she snagged his trousers with his wallet in it, he chased after her with his willy exposed and kicked up a fuss in the hotel lobby scaring the **** out of the female night manager who responded by putting two bullets into him.

Etta James identified his corpse (nice billing if they were on tour together) and claimed he was Emmet Tilled. I’m sure it didn’t look pleasant but I figure James’ impression of his disfigurement was exaggerated by shock.

Elisa Boyer - The Hooker (and damn she was fine)

I like a Change is Gonna Come too. His later stuff is way better than his fifties material.

It's ironic he died in the way he did given his gospel background. It's all kind of sad.

Sam Cooke was well respected by those young artist coming up in the Sixties, one of the great voices silenced much too soon.

Sam Cooke had a voice like velvet! Sad loss to music but he left us music that still sounds good today. 'I love you for sentimental reasons' is a favourite of mine.
