Fatback Opinions??
About 15 years ago, I got turned onto this history of Funk book by Rickey Vincent. Highly recommended by the way. At the back of it had a list of some of the best funk albums. Early on, I based my music collection on that list. Every year I set out to buy 8 or so CDs and I try to include a few new artists.
One artist I kept putting off buying was Fatback. Every year I'd plan to get a cd but could never decide on a good entry point. I'd listen to samples & like certain songs but never found many strong albums. What are the best Fatback albums? Is it better to just get a greatest hits package? This week I picked up 14 KARAT because I liked the song "Let's Do it Again". That is a great funk tune & there are a few other nice songs but most have really weak lyrics & vocals. Great instrumentals though! What's the opinion of the Fatback Band? |
Thanks for the book recommendation.
I dunno, a lot of those old funk albums were 'padded' and not back-to-back hits. But the 'best of' might not include all those weird little funky tracks. :( Would be nice if they put out a box set, right? |
As a Fatback fan for years I can tell you all their albums are great, I've got them all and I've not been disappointed. I think if you like several of their songs already you'll only like the band more with the more you hear from them.

Try a few more albums out, mid to late 70's and early 80's were their best.

They seem to have great instrumentals. The vocals can be weak though. Combination of poor singing or bad lyrics. ( "Your Love is So Strange?" yikes!!)
The music is always pretty strong from what I've heard though. |
"Keep on Steppin'" from 74 is there best Album, Mr. Bass Man is on of my Favorite Funk Tracks ever
