Both versions are good but Edwin's version is a epic classic.
His version is the best known version.

I think his version is more raw and funkier.

Great question. I'd say Starr's version. His vocal says it all! Without question the GREATEST protest song EVER recorded.

Impossible to choose as both are great. I also like the Frankie Goes to Hollywood version. After FGTH, Edwin Starr seemed to make his version heavier when he played it live. Around the time of Reagan's Star Wars plan, he added the line, 'We don't want to die, don't put your pistols in the sky.'
