Morris Day and the Time

any thoughts?
Not really sure what exact genre they would fit into but one of the best live performing bands I've seen

You placed them in the right thread. I consider them to be both soul/funk with a little bit more funk elements but they incorporated so many different genres in their music. I think they are one of the best bands in general.

I like Morris Day's attitude, but we call them tights here:

I saw Morris Day and the Time about 25 years ago. They were a great band but they played a very short set of only about 45 minutes.

They did a routine where Morris pulled an overweight lady onstage, out of the audience, and joked about her obesity at her expense... Which I found tasteless and offensive. The "fat lady" routine was a standard part of Morris Day's stage act but it didn't make it any less uncomfortable to watch.

They are a Funk band but more specifically...Minneapolis style Funk.
