D Angelo (Manager says new album for 2014)

What does Music Banter think about D Angelo? D Angelo was one of the main founders of the neo soul movement in the mid 90s with his debut "Brown Sugar". He plays multiple instruments, a songwriter, experiments with a variety of genres such as soul, rock, funk to name a few. Some of his inspirations is Prince and Marvin Gaye. He only has released two studio albums which are Brown Sugar and Voodoo and for over the last decade hasnt done anything musically but recently in January of this year he has returned to music through touring. He toured all of Europe and over the summer came to the states. I had the pleasure of seeing him live... and this man is VERY VERY talented the show was INCREDIBLE!!!

Have you seen THE video???--I don't even have to say the name of the song because most heterosexual women who know Deangelo know exactly what song I am talking about. The brother can sing and he is HOT as hell--what's not to like.

Oooh lord---- Deangelo-if you ever read this--not only could you eat crackers in my bed anytime day or night- you could throw your dirty socks on the floor- you could leave the toilet seat up - and I dont give a **** if you NEVER ask for directions----

Soulflower 09-10-2012 06:28 PM

Some of my favorite Deangelo songs are "Heaven Must Be Like This", " Lady", I Found My Smile Again"-- I really just like his smooth vibe and I'm pretty sure he is thinking of me when all that honey is flowing from his luscious lips :)

Some of my other favorite Soul & R&B artists are:

Kenny Lattimore--I have always felt he was under rated
Babyface
Maxwell--I heard Urban Hang Suite and it was a wrap
Joe
Sade-she's been around for a long time and she's still got it if you ask me
Keith Sweat - he was just the stuff back in the day
The Deele-"Two Occasions" is still one of my favorite songs after all these years
After Seven-"Ready or Not"-a classic
Bill Withers-

And I can't forget Gerald Levert---so sad he is gone--a beautiful man with a beautiful voice

Sugar Daddy is his one of his new songs that he is promoting on his tour..... I really like it, its very Prince inspired.

This video was the infamous video that made D angelo go away for over a decade... Apparently he didnt like critics hailing him as a sex icon more so than his efforts as a musician/artist.... He really had a hard time during this period he claims.

A look back at a underrated gem
http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/...oo+DAngelo.jpg

Voodoo is the second studio album by D'Angelo, released on January 25,2000. It is his last official album that he has released.

According to Wikipedia:
Inspirations for the Album

On his visit to South Carolina, D'Angelo stated that he "went through this runnel, through gospel, blues, and a lot of old soul, old James Brown, early, early Sly and the Family Stone, and a lot of Jimi Hendrix", and "I learned a lot about music, myself, and where I want to go musically" In the same interview, he cited the deaths of rappers Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. as having a great effect on him during the period. In another interview with Touré, D'Angelo said that he had lost his enthusiasm after Brown Sugar's reception and "was gettin' jaded, lookin' at what go on in the business". On his purpose for returning, D'Angelo stated "I had to reiterate why I was doin' that in the first place, and the reason was the love for the music".

http://gurn.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/13334067.jpeg

D'Angelo was dissatisfied with the direction of R&B during that particular period. In an interview for Jet, he said that "the term R&B doesn't mean what it used to mean. R&B is pop, that's the new word for R&B."[ He also insisted modern R&B was "a joke", adding that "the funny thing about it is that the people making this **** are dead serious about the stuff they're making. It's sad—they've turned black music into a club thing."

In an interview for Ebony, D'Angelo said of his role and influences for Voodoo, "I consider myself very respectful of the masters who came before. In some ways, I feel a responsibility to continue and take the cue from what they were doing musically and vibe on it. That's what I want to do. But I want to do it for this time and this generation".[ In the album's EPK, D'Angelo said that Voodoo is "like a funk album. The natural progression of soul, the next step to soul is funk".

http://www.okayplayer.com/wp-content...11/dangelo.jpg

Creation of Concept For The Album

In an interview for USA Today, D'Angelo said of the album's title and its meaning, "the myriad influences found on it can be traced through the blues and back deeper in history through songs sung–in religious voodoo ceremonies." In an interview for Jet magazine, he stated that his intentions for recording the album were to express the power of music and artistic respect for it. The theme is illustrated in Voodoo's liner photography by Thierry LesGoudes, which depicts D'Angelo participating in a voodoo ceremony.

http://imageshack.com/a/img33/7940/dokz.jpg

Voodoo's press release discussed D'Angelo's concept, stating "Lyrically, D'Angelo offers that much of Voodoo is personal reflection: touching on subjects like spirituality, sexuality, growth, and in particular, becoming a father. Musically, as he puts it, Voodoo is 'definitely groove-based'". D'Angelo also said that "My inspiration was just to go farther. To get to that next level. To push it even further. To work against the floss and the grain and to get even deeper into the sound that I'm hearing ... and the thing is, I'm just looking at Voodoo as just the beginning. I'm still developing and growing and still listening to that sound I hear inside my head ... So this is the first step

Recording

Voodoo evolved from four years of sessions and featured R&B, hip hop, and jazz musicians and recording technicians. Drummer and producer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson of The Roots was D'Angelo's right hand man during the sessions. He and his crew studied bootleg videotapes of classic R&B artists such as Marvin Gaye, James Brown, and Jimi Hendrix, along with reruns of Soul Train. On several occasions, D'Angelo listened to Sly & the Family Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On (1971), which had an influential production. The crew recorded numerous hours of unreleased, original material, as well as covers of their influencers' material.Collectively referred to by D'Angelo as "yoda", these influencers included soul artist Al Green, funk artist George Clinton, and Afrobeat artist Fela Kuti.

http://blogs.houstonpress.com/rocks/d'angelo.jpg

Audio engineer Russell Elevado, who recorded and mixed Voodoo, along with Erykah Badu's Mama's Gun and Common's Like Water for Chocolate, used old school recording techniques and vintage mixing gear for the albums in order to achieve the distinct sounds found in classic recorded works. While mainstream recording techniques at the time often involved the use of hi-tech digital equipment, Elevado employed the use of analog equipment, enhancement plug-ins, and a blend of live instrumentation. Notable from the production was that most of it, with the exception of "Untitled (How Does It Feel)",was recorded live with no overdubbing of its instrumentation, in contrast to contemporary R&B production.

For Voodoo's sessions, D'Angelo appropriated most of the instruments on the album's songs, contributing with drums, electric guitar, keyboards, and percussion.During its recording, he employed amplifiers, microphones, a Fender Rhodes keyboards and organ originally used by musician Stevie Wonder for Talking Book (1972),and a recording board originally used by Jimi Hendrix. On Voodoo's recording atmosphere, D'Angelo stated "I believe Jimi was there. Jimi, Marvin Gaye, all the folks we were gravitating to. I believe they blessed the project".

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._recording.jpg

D'Angelo composed all of the bass lines for Voodoo and sequenced them for Welsh bassist Pino Palladino, who he had met after being asked to do a duet with B.B. King at the time of Voodoo's earlier sessions.Palladino was asked by D'Angelo to learn and improvise the bass arrangements on his 1961 model P bass. For "The Root", "Greatdayndamornin'", and "Spanish Joint", guitarist Charlie Hunter simultaneously played guitar and bass sections with a custom eight-string guitar/bass combo, which had three lower bass and five upper guitar strings. It also had separate pickups for each set of strings, as well separate outputs for each pickup. In order to adjust production-wise to Hunter's intricate playing, Elevado had separate outputs from Hunter's guitar connected to a separate bass and guitar amplifier. He has said that there was enough separation to manage an adequate sound on both amplifiers, in spite of slight "bleeding into each other" from the pickups in close proximity to each other.

D'Angelo and his music crew constructed several of the songs' grooves for the album that were very artistic and creative for its time. Questlove helped design the sparse funk, soul and hip hop beats on the generally groove-based record. In later interviews, Questlove discussed that he and D'Angelo incorporated much of the distinctive percussive rhythms of Detroit hip hop producer, Slum Village-member and The Ummah-affiliate J Dilla, also known as Jay Dee (RIP). A part of the musical collective Soulquarians, Dilla served as a frequent collaborator of theirs.Although album tracks such as "Left & Right" and "Devil's Pie" help to bring this claim to light, J Dilla himself was not officially credited for production. However, he contributed significantly to Voodoo's overall sound, specifically the rhythm and percussion.

One of the characteristics of the drumming style implemented in recording the album is its adherence to human timing, as the tracks were mostly programmed mechanically during recording, therefore resulting in the album's intentional sloppiness. In a later interview, Questlove discussed the intention and purpose of including imperfection in the album's sound, stating "we wanted to play as perfectly as we could, but then deliberately insert the little glitch that makes it sound messed up. The idea was to sound disciplined, but with a total human feel
Questlove also acknowledged J Dilla's influence over the recording sessions for Voodoo. He said of Dilla's unique programming method during the sessions, "He makes programmed stuff so real, you really can’t tell it’s programmed. He might program 128 bars, with absolutely no looping or quantizing ..

Musical Style and Genre
Voodoo incorporates musical elements of jazz, funk, hip hop, blues, and soul.It features vintage influences and a looser, more improvisational structure, which contrasts the more conventional song structure of Brown Sugar.Music writer Greg Kot has considered the album a production of the Soulquarians, calling it "the most radical of the many fine records" conceived by the collective's members. In an interview with the New Orleans Times-Picayune's Shawn Rhea, D'Angelo attributed the album's experimental and jam-like atmosphere to the fact that most of Voodoo was recorded "live and it's first take".On its eclectic and conceptual style, Rhea commented D'Angelo seems to have channeled the brilliance of his musical forefathers, living and dead, during the crafting of this album. It is a complex, intricate collection of songs that, like voodoo, is simultaneously secular and spiritual, sensual and sacred, earthbound and ethereal". Recording engineer Russell Elevado's analog mixing and old school production techniques contributed to the album's jazz element and vintage sound. On its jazz influence, D'Angelo stated "because a lot of the album was cut live and has free playing on it, it was hard not to go in a jazz direction".

The album features aggressive multi-tracking of D'Angelo's voice, a technique similar to the production of Sly & the Family Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On (1971) and Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On (1973).The multi-tracking on Voodoo significantly affected the clarity of D'Angelo's vocals. In Voodoo's liner notes, Saul Williams wrote of its heavy use of multi-tracking, stating "You might respond, 'Lyrics? Yo, I can't even understand half the **** that D'Angelo be saying. That nigg@ sounds like Bobby McFerrin on opium'. And I'd say, 'You're right. Neither can I. But I am drawn to figure out what it is that he's saying. His vocal collaging intrigues me'". Music writers have also noted the production style and sound of Voodoo as reminiscent of the sound of the P-Funk opus Mothership Connection (1975), Gaye's downtempo disco-soul record I Want You (1976), and Miles Davis's jazz fusion works In a Silent Way (1969) and Bitches Brew (1970).

http://cdn.thefader.com/wp-content/u.../D_Angelo.jpeg

D'Angelo and his crew also utilized a hip hop production style, which often subordinates song structure to a stable foundation for a rapper's delivery and flow. This was familiar to D'Angelo, as his first original recordings were rap demos.Subsequently, most of the songs were performed without a definitive structure, settling into a mid-tempo groove with minimal verse-chorus-bridge progression. This also resulted in an emphasis on texture over both structure and hooks

NME praised the albums diverse sound and commented that the album "represents nothing less than African American music at a crossroads ... To simply call D'Angelo's work neo-classic soul, as per corporate diktat, would be reductive, for that would be to ignore the elements of vaudeville jazz, Memphis horns, ragtime blues, funk and bass grooves, not to mention hip-hop, that slip out of every pore of these 13 haunted songs The album one two grammys: One for best R&B album and the smash single "Untitled" won for Best male R&B Performance and by critics considered one of the best albums of all time.

Well I dont have a problem saying that its from Wikipedia. I was just trying to display facts about the album in a creative way. I never tried to imply it was my words. I was actually going to say it was from Wikipedia and was going to edit and add more things to the post related to the album and the era in general. Some of the statements are actually my opinion as well.

Some of my favorite songs from the Voodoo album:
Untitled (How Does It Feel)
Devils Pie
Playa Playa
Left& Right
Spanish Joint
Chicken Grease

I think this album is a classic and was way ahead of its time. You can hear D Angelos influences but he still presents a creative original style. I am SO READY D FOR AN ALBUM ITS BEEN TO LONG lol

D'Angelo Premieres Unreleased 'I'm Glad You're Mine' Live Song: Exclusive
http://www.billboard.com/files/style...board-650a.jpg
By Chris Payne, New York | March 20, 2014

The Al Green cover comes from the singer's upcoming live album "Live At The Jazz Café."
Fans have been waiting 14 years for the follow-up to D'Angelo's virtuoso R&B classic, "Voodoo." When that new LP comes is anyone's guess, but rest assured Billboard has a new D'Angelo live cut you've probably never heard before -- unless you were at his Sept. 14, 1995 gig at the Jazz Café in London. Below, check out D'Angelo cover Al Green's "I'm Still in Love with You" on his live cut, "I'm Glad You're Mine."
The previously unreleased song comes from the forthcoming "Live at the Jazz Café, London: The Complete Show" album, due March 25 on Virgin/UME. Six of its 11 tracks come from 1996's "Live At The Jazz Café, London," a valued collector's item, as it was only released in Japan. Five of its tracks (including this song) are previously unheard rarities added just now for the new edition. :yikes:
"Let's see if y'all remember this one," says D'Angelo to introduce the live cover. The starting point might be familiar, but D takes Green's song for a journey well beyond its original three-minute run time and lets it sprawl out into an improv-friendly six-minute affair. In the liner notes, he reflects on how his love for jazz and knowledge of music history birthed tracks like this:
"My root is gospel, and I grew up listening to Prince and hip-hop on the radio. Jazz came much later. I am like a music historian, and just listen to old music whenever I have time, like vintage jazz. I think that’s where my jazziness is coming from. I love jazz," he says.
In January 2013, Questlove told Billboard that D'Angelo's long-awaited new album was 99% done and that he'd been putting in late night drum sessions for what sounded like an "instant classic or his generation's version of Sly and the Family Stone's 'There's a Riot Goin' On.'"
Back in 1995, this recorded London set served to introduce a vital new singer to a new country after "Brown Sugar" had hit in the U.S., but before it had been released in England. Here is the official track list of "Live at the Jazz Café, London: The Complete Show":

1. Introduction
2. Fencewalk (Mandrill cover)
3. Sweet Sticky Thing (Ohio Players cover)
4. Jonz in My Bones
5. Me and Those Dreamin’ Eyes of Mine
6. Sh*t, Damn, Motherf*cker
7. Cruisin’ (Smokey Robinson cover)
8. I’m Glad You’re Mine (Al Green cover)
9. Lady

D'Angelo's Manager Kevin Liles says new cd WILL drop 2014
http://okp-cdn.okayplayer.com/wp-con...view-feat.jpeg

D'Angelo's Manager Kevin Liles Insists 'Voodoo' Follow-Up Will Drop In 2014 Okayplayer

For some reason, I can't copy the text of the article, but follow the link.

From Billboard:

D'Angelo's Album Will Be Out in 2014, Touring in October, Manager Insists | Billboard

t's been so long, with so many false alarms, you start to lose track. D'Angelo's long-awaited follow-up to his classic 2000 album "Voodoo" was supposed to come out in 2007. Then 2009. Then 2010. Then he started touring, for the first time in 10 years, in 2011 and into 2012, airing four solid new songs: "Ain't That Easy," "The Charade," "In Another Life," and "Sugar Daddy."

Last year, he played some shows as a duo with longtime friend and collaborator ?uestlove as "Brothers in Arms." He performed the electrifying encore at Michael Dorf's "Music of Prince" tribute at Carnegie Hall, along with ?uestlove and members of the Roots and the Revolution, around the same time. He turned up at Bonnaroo last weekend, playing covers. He even gave an underwhelming 75-minute-long talk, moderated by veteran journalist (and Billboard alum) Nelson George, last month at the Brooklyn Museum as part of the Red Bull Music Academy, which provided some entertaining anecdotes but not much in the way of actual news. The album was clearly a taboo topic: ?uestlove, called onstage to join in the talk a couple of times, was the only one who dared to bring it up, and the chat ended immediately afterward.

D'Angelo's Voodoo Still T...my: Review

Yet D'Angelo's manager, Kevin Liles of KWL Management and a longtime label and branding exec, told Billboard last week that the wait for the world's most long-awaited album apart from Dr. Dre's "Detox" is almost over. Now, that's nothing we haven't heard before: ?uestlove said in December of 2011 that the album was "pretty much 97 percent done," and in January of 2013, he told Billboard that it was "99 percent done."

In March of 2013, Liles told Billboard, "We're trying to finish the album. Right now we have 13 songs done, trying to think about the sequence of the album, mastering and mixing within the next two weeks, and release the thing. Ain't no question it's coming."

D'Angelo Premieres Unrele... Exclusive

Judging by that tectonic pace, the album actually should be just about approximately almost 100 percent done right about now. Here's what Liles said:

"Here's the thing: with D'Angelo it was a process. He didn't perform for 10 years and he's been working on an album for the past 12 years. I actually got him to go out and do 30 shows [in 2011-2012], and then we did some 'Brothers in Arms' shows. I said, 'We have to get motivated around what people want to hear from you, and what does it mean to come back to that space?' He very bluntly put it, 'Kev, the studio and the stage: that's my lifeblood. Now that I've touched it again, now that I see it again, I wanna be sure that the baby I'm about to have -- the album -- that I take it to the point where it's all it can be.'

D'Angelo Added to James B...ute Lineup

"There'll be an album this year: there's 14 records so far, we might have a couple of bonus records, but all the recording is basically done and we're mixing and mastering now. Definitely, he'll be back.

"We'll probably start an international tour in October, we'll come back [to the States]. We're doing a James Brown tribute in August [at the Hollywood Bowl] and some one-off things. But the touring will probably start in October and 2015."

Billboard: What's the album like?

Liles: "To limit it to soul is not the case, because there is a rock influence. But at the same time, it's very melodic and there's an influence of all the things he loves: there's James Brown, there's Prince, and everything people grew up loving D'Angelo for, from 'Brown Sugar' to 'Voodoo.' It's a mixture and an evolution of where he is right now. And you have to think that when you have the opportunity to work 10 years on an album, that album's truly gonna be what you want it to be. Is it limited to the kind of sound that he did with the earlier records? No, it's not."

BB: Does it have a name yet?

KL: "There is a potential name, but I don't wanna give you a potential name and then change it."

BB: And it's definitely coming in 2014?

Simply put, D' got skilzz. He just needs to return to his "musical base" he established back when & RE-build from there.....

He's got the "foundation" (tho' it may have been buried by an emotionally deep "rock-slide"). Jus' gotta "dig" himself out....

Over the summer, D’Angelo’s manager, Kevin Liles, made two rather sizable promises: 1) the reclusive R&B singer would release his long-awaited follow-up to 2000’s Voodoo by year’s end, and 2) he would tour behind the record in early 2015.

Barring any Beyoncé/U2-style surprise release, it appears the world will go another year without a new D’Angelo LP. However, Liles’ other promise has come at least partially true, as D’Angelo has announced a new round of international dates. Slated for mid-February through early March, the 13-date “Second Coming Tour” centers mostly around shows in Germany, with additional dates scheduled in the UK, Sweden, and Switzerland.

According to a press release, the shows will see D’Angelo and his band The Vanguard “combine many popular hits with new songs and fresh interpretations of covers.”

D Angelo is not the "super star" type and he has always been that way. He is shy, private and doesn't really like being in the spotlight. He has had a lot of drug problems over the years so I am happy he is trying to get his life together. However, I am not sure what is holding him back from releasing the new album! He has a ton of new material that he performs live so he has enough to make an album.

I am still going to have faith though. Its been 15 years since his last album...he needs to release something and stop playing games!!!!!!

Top 10 Lyrics From D'Angelo's 'Black Messiah'

It's been close to a week since the surprise release of D'Angelo & The Vanguard's Black Messiah, enough time for the formerly distorted lyrics of D'Angelo to become more clear and significant. The easiest tone to take withBlack Messiah, in its entire majestic roar, is that it's an album rooted in the black experience -- of struggle, survival and love.
D'Angelo's 'Black Messiah,' and Why Waiting 14 Years For Music Isn't Bad
For an album that leads with a Brown Sugar sliding weed metaphor and closes with reflection, plucking memorable lyrical mementos from D'Angelo & The Vanguard's latest is therapy. Expect any of these verses from D'Angelo and co-writer Kendra Foster to wind up as late night texts that are blind to consequence and discovery.
Below are the 10 best lyrics from Black Messiah.
10. "Another Life" (Verse 1)
Fully convinced he's ready to walk back into love, D’Angelo quips in the opening line, "How does one attempt to be, the kind of friend you would want to keep?" One first date may start the cycle all over again, but this time D'Angelo's ready to breathe, and enjoy himself.
9. "The Door" (Verse 1)
The folk whistle and guitar licks of "The Door" show out heavily here, detraction from the severity of the song's message, a break up. "Don’' lock yourself out that door" echoes throughout but the opening stanza feels like a set up for a list of pros and cons resulting in the end.
8. "Betray My Heart" (Verse 2)
"Betray My Heart" find D'Angelo speaking on self-love, an aspect that Black Messiah approaches in terms of a whole body deciding to make itself singular. He’s no longer about to backtrack and apprehend himself: "You, my soul can depend on me."
7. "Prayer" (Verse 2)
"Prayer" may be the most straight-lined moment on Black Messiah. It's gospel to the bone, asking for deliverance. D'Angelo understood the bleakness of the world on "Till It's Done." Now he just wants to be free of it: "Keep me away from temptation, deliver us from evil."
6. "Til' It's Done (Tutu)" (Verse 1)
Most have wanted to declare Black Messiah a closer relative to Voodoo thanBrown Sugar. "Til' It's Done (Tutu)" fits somewhere in a different area, the angered place where "1000 Deaths" roared but more folksy, questioning it all until we leave. Key line here: "tragedy flows unbound and there’s no place to run, 'till it's done."
5. "Back To The Future" (Verse 2)
On the surface, "Back To The Future" is a send-up The Roots & J Dilla's "Dynamite" from 1996's Things Fall Apart. A Soulquarian to the bone, D'Angelo leads The Vanguard right down the same road, kicking up his Richmond, VA roots and even jokes about certain fans caring more about him physical shape than his mental one.
4. "Really Love" (Verse 2)
Love is all about the art of letting go. It’s about understanding your own faults and edges and wanting them to be smoothed out by someone who gets them. "I’m not an easy man, to overstand, but girl you’re patient with me," is where D’Angelo lands on "Really Love," a simple love song almost ripped from the book of Stevie Wonder.
3. "The Charade" (Verse 1)
"Crawling through a systematic maze to demise, pain in our eyes... wading through the lies," are fifteen of the first eighteen words of "The Charade." You're supposed to clap, sway and dance to "The Charade" because it feels breezy and free. There's pain here, a stated sense of being fed up watching wool being tossed over our eyes.
2. "1000 Deaths" (Verse 3)
"1000 Deaths" screams through pumped bass about recognition. Malcolm X’s opening speech dictating the track’s every move. It’s third verse, packed with prayer to God for strength ("he don’t want no coward soldier") and given purpose ("I was born to kill"), the wails of awareness about life.
1. "Ain't That Right" (Verse 2)
Confidence is something D'Angelo never lacked, even when he knows you can’t let him go. The opening chords of the winter's warmest ounce of soul music start in anger and swell with him playing oracle. "I offer you the truth, you need the comfort of my lovin' to bring out the best in you."
I guess U know me well, I don't like winter
