It's Neo Soul Week!

Neo Soul apparently refers to soul and r&b revival in the 90s. Let's see what Wikipedia says:

Developed in the United States and United Kingdom during the 1980s and early 1990s as a soul "revival" movement, neo soul emerged into the mainstream with the commercial and critical breakthroughs of several neo soul artists during the 1990s, as it was marketed as an alternative to the producer-driven, digitally-approached R&B of the time. Since its initial mainstream popularity and impact on the sound of contemporary R&B, it has been expanded and diversified musically through the works of both American and international artists. According to Mark Anthony Neal, "neo-soul and its various incarnations has helped to redefine the boundaries and contours of black pop".

Hey I like some of this stuff. Looking forward to hear what you're gonna post.
I'll start with Erykah Badu - "Sometimes"

I dont know if Teedra Moses counts for this thread, but I'll never miss a chance to plug her. Such a great voice.

it's hardly a sub-genre I listen to much but these two are some of my faves:-

As usual, I listen to more popular Neo Soul but I'd like to hear some others that aren't as heard of.

YouTube - ‪Seal - Crazy (Video)‬‏
This single should qualify in the Neo-Soul category, one of my favorite from the early 90s. (Seal-Crazy)

To use the tags just insert the 4Fc67yQsPqQ in between the two tags like this

4Fc67yQsPqQ [/...YOUTUBE]

without the three dots of course.

I recently found out about two neo-soul artists that are pretty good: Ebrahim and Slakah the Beatchild.

Other than that there's the standards: Erykah Badu, D'angelo, Maxwell, Bilal, Raphael Saadiq, etc.

This has some elements of indie rock actually...

I've always kinda thought that neo-soul was a misnomer for something that was really contemporary R&b. TO me, this is true neo-soul:

He's going to be playing in Mobile so I may end up going to see him.

Isn't contemporary R&B all of the stuff that has the autotune and heavy hip hop beats/background.

Well, in this millenium, yes, but not so much in the 90's when the phrase/sub-genre neo-soul was coined.

She had such a great voice but never really gained many plaudits.

A coffee table band here and understandably so but I really like this track.

The guy is a twat and never did anything again but what a great track.

I am cross pollinating here with Nu Jazz a little but even if a track is utterly commercial I can still give it merit if it still sounds tolerable today.
