The Meters
A Funk/Soul backing band that branched out in the early 70's (when else?) and brought out a few albums of their own of which Rejuvenation is their pinnacle. This track (although edited) is one of the finest Funk rock workouts I have ever heard. |
i first heard them through a cover that Red Hot Chili Peppers did of the song "Africa", which they did as "Hollywood (Africa)"
definately a skilled and funky band. incidentally, the Chili's version is pretty good as well |
I only have Funkify Your Life by the Meters but I love it. So simple yet so groovy.
It Ain't No Use is pretty sweet. |
For Meters fans- George Porter jr is still playing/touring. As his own band, with an allstart ensemble, and supporting other people.
He played here with Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kretzmann and another Blues singer recently. |
If the Meters are the first funk band, then GPjr is the first funk bass player.

The Meters are life-changing ... their first few LPs have a slippery loose-tight groove and simple-but-not-simple stacks of riffs that made me rethink a lot of things ... every one of the four Meters is doing something interesting at every time, but it always works as an ensemble ... the recorded tunes are usually 3 minutes or so, but you can imagine them going on all night in a live setting

George Porter Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste are one hell of a rhythm section. The groove is SO deep.
This John Mayer cover of Cissy Strut is wicked. Pino Palladino is hands down my favourite bass player, and that Steve Jordan isn't half bad. |
