Anybody got any super heavy, fuzzed out Funk like this:
Psy-fi? Frownland? Anyone?
I hate you guys.
That song sounds more like Rare Earth than Rare Earth.
Haven't heard of them. I'll give them a shot. Which album should I start with?
I just listened to Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow by Funkadelic for the first time, and it's everything I've ever wanted from music. Seriously, if anyone out there has any psyched out funky recs in the same vein, kindly lay them on me. |
I can't really help unless you want some afrobeat.
^ Same. :/

Give Sly & The Family Stone a shot. Anything from Stand and after should be what you're after. Also, Band Of Gypsys, Hendrix's funkiest album - it has that heavy psych rock guitar he's known for, but a groovier rhythm section. Should give you something to work w/. Also, Parliament if you haven't checked them out, they're basically the same band as Funkadelic. Like Frowny says, there's some good afrobeat out there that could be compatible w/ what you're looking for. I highly recommend checking out some Fela Kuti. Also, about Rare Earth, I can't give a good recommendation - I haven't heard many of their songs, but their three hits that I've heard all seem to have that sound. This don't sound bad though, eh? |

Edit: Omg, just found out that I Just Want to Celebrate was by Rare Earth. I fucking love that song, but all these years, I thought it was by Grand Funk Railroad, 'cause that's how it was credited when my sister first showed it to me after downloading it off of Limewire years ago. |
I have to say I'm genuinely surprised that you hadn't heard any Sly or that particular Hendrix album before.
Anyway, Ori, I've got some killer funk recs for ya. 10 total, so I'll put 'em in a spoiler. Spoiler for Funk, Baby!:
This one might fit in with what you're looking for, as well. Funk mixed with some rock/jazz/afrobeat with a dash of prog added to the mix.
https://i.imgur.com/35PQMzM.jpg Demon Fuzz - Afreaka! (1970) Worth a listen for the opening track alone. |
Listened to Maggot Brain today. Super Stupid is my new jam.
Did you listen to Afreaka? I had assumed that you already knew about it tbh.
Just chillin with a few classics.
Spoiler for people who have garbage computers that can barely handle a gif.:
Put at least 50% of that **** in spoilers dude. Some of us have garbage computers that can barely handle a gif.

Afreaka! is great! I'm a huge fan of "Disillusioned Man" on that record
Hi, I'm new here so let's gets thing started.
I am huge fan of Soul, Funk, Disco music. I know and can name some of oldies bands and soloist. However, I like to know more about the bands or soloist since the information is quite limited in the place where I lived and grew up. So if there are any suggestions, let me know. Cheers!!! |

Has anyone heard the new After Funk Album?
Charles Bradley covering "Changes" by Black Sabbath...
Charles Bradley - Changes |
Roy Ayers is my spirit animal.
I really love the old Supremes from 60's and 70's with Diana Ross.
Really digging Curtis Harding lately.
Nothing mindblowing but so ****ing nice and chill and awesome for driving a convertible in the summer heat. |
Enchantment - Give it up ( 1983 )
Omg, I forgot how much ****ing fun Birtha is. Snotty female vox, first wave metal guitar licks, girl group soul harmonies, fat bass grooves, funky-ass drum breaks. It's like everything good about the early seventies got poured into one album and I love it. By far the best two bucks I ever dropped at a record store.

Really digging lately !

Soul
Have you all seen the movie soul? They incorporated so much great music. In general I would suggest anything Stevie wonder. Or Marvin Gaye!
Not a bad idea.
Stick with anything from the mid 50s - 84. After that it sucks

Checking out this new 24 hr music channel out of Brooklyn that features live soul music. Not bad.
You should check Electro Deluxe. You can find them from spotify. It is also from France. I know it doesn't sound like a Soul band, but they have a lot of Soul songs. They also have funk songs and some jazzy songs. Actually one of their most soulful song called "Where is the love" is one where Ben L'oncle Soul is featuring.
Check this out. Psychedelic jazz soul that somehow combines radical socialist politics with fire and brimstone Christianity, according to legend it got shelved by Atlantic Records because Spiro Agnew gave them a phone call saying it would start riots.
