P-funk

Funkadelic And Parliament (2 seperate bands that then later joined under George Clinton) in my opinion are truly some of the best funketeers around if you ask me. Their music is incredible

Dylstew 03-21-2014 01:13 PM

I've never really listened to Soul and Funk, but I'm interested in both genres.
Where does one start with Funk and where does one start with Soul?
What are the important sub genres of soul?
I'm mostly interested in Funk.

(Yup, I've just asked almost the same question in the jazz and blues forums, I kind of want to discover some new music.)

Rjinn 03-26-2014 03:11 AM

I'd like more funk recs please. I've been looking, but haven't found much that's really interesting. For those of you who have an idea of what my music taste is like, or what you consider mind-blowing I'd like to hear it. I prefer something experimental with a strong funk swing. I'm familiar with the well known artists like James Brown, Parliament, Funkadelic, Sly & the Family Stone, The Meters, etc.

Cheers.

Necromancer 03-26-2014 09:35 AM

I'm not really familiar with what type and style of funk you guys actually like, but I will recommend that you check out the band Zapp. And Zapp featuring Roger Troutman. Zapp was formed in Hamilton Ohio in 1977. They were highly influential to the electro sub genre of funk.

Check them out on YouTube, I think you guys might like them.

Rjinn 04-01-2014 12:47 AM

I swear I've heard More Bounce to the Ounce featured in some hip-hop song. Was it Biggie? Anyway, they're ok from what I've heard so far.

Kind of like Sly and the Family Stone meets Frank Zappa in the 90's.

MISTERQCUE 06-18-2014 10:09 PM

Maybe I can be of a some assistance as 70's Funk/Soul/R&B runs thick thru my veins.....!

CharlesBradley 06-22-2014 01:32 PM

I absolutely love Charles Bradley and The Budos band. Can you recommend me artists like them? I mean some recent releases, i don't like the 90s, 80s and etc. I want something like them from the new era.

MISTERQCUE 06-23-2014 09:32 PM

This particular site offers it's list of the "100 GREATEST FUNK SONGS" ever.

http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_rb-funk.html

While I personally feel/opine that some of thier picks are of the "generic value", they do list some classics that s/b heard (tho' I've also listed an additional 100 -total funk song count to 200)!

I've "bolded" the "joints" I felt met & or exceeded the "standard level" of funk.

Red-hi'lighted, underlined & increased font-sized jammies are "MUST-HEAR", FUNK CLASSICS!

Purple-flavored, bold & underlined song, #184 "ALWAYS THERE" by famed-saxist Ronnie Laws is a jazz classic yet spurred no less than 20 different, cover versions - most famous cover of 'em all being performed by '70's funk-royalty band, "The Side Effects" (Fantasy Records). "Always There" being 1 of my ALL-TIME fave songs (I myself have produced, performed and recorded 3 diff covers of this jazz classic)!

Again, my bolded & hi'lited RED joints below are only my opinion (worth .02cents) of what are the standard & classic funk joints & you might agree or disagree with 'em. There are many I feel shoul have made this list (Kool & the Gang's "Love The Life You Live" is 1 of them), but I'm using below as a starting point for discussion.:afro:

Looking for some tunes that sound like the Mummies. I've yet to come across anything like it on my own, so I'm asking for a little help to see if their's anything out there that has eluded me. Here's a sample:

Psy-Fi 08-15-2014 03:56 PM

^ Blowfly is the only one that comes to my mind at the moment. Some of his stuff is soul/funk and the rest is pretty much all over the musical map. He even did a punk album of cover songs. The quality of the musicianship ranges from quite good to cringe-worthy, depending on who he was working with at the time.

Kind of reminds me of Wild Cherry. Their horn section is at least equal to. Check out their Commodores cover I Feel Sanctified.

They have a few better songs than the popular single Play That Funky Music. Its so overplayed and outdated.

Yes, I've been railroaded into playing that many times. I'll check out their other stuff. Thank you mucho.

Plankton 08-20-2014 08:04 AM

I checked into some Blowfly, and while they're very funny, they just don't have the quality musicianship as the Mummies. Maybe I didn't find the right songs. *shrug* I did put Electronic Pussy Sucker in the mix for a CD I'm making though.

Wild Cherry has some quality stuff. They do rely a bit on the same formula as PTFMWB though.

I also grabbed some Parliament, Bootsy (really good stuff), and some Sly ATF Stone for the CD too. Went over well at the Shed. The Shed now has a Kenwood surround system, btw. The neighbors are not happy about this.

:p:

His stuff is hit or miss as far as the musicianship, but lyrical lines like "ridin' down the road, carryin' a load, feelin' more sexy than a pregnant toad" definitely tickle my musical funnybone!

That Funky single is from later in their career.
As fine as it is, you're better off starting with
The Time Has Come or just grab up any of the hits
collections that have the full 11-minute version
of Time Has Come Today. Listen to the drums.

Thanks Rosie, post is quite informative compared to the ones that just post youtube videos with nothing to say. ;)

Hey guys, I need some fresh music. I recently fell in love with Funkadelic, especially their first 3 records and I'm in need of something similar. Something that has those strong, echoey beats, that loud squelching guitar and the psychedelic nastiness that they're famous for. Some of my favourite tracks include "I Wanna know if it's good to you"( Fuzzy rocks the vocals and Bernie kills keys), "Super Stupid", "Good Ole Music","I'll Bet You", "Wars of Armageddon"(one if Tiki's greatest works, imo) and "Friday Night August the 14th".

The closest I've gotten to finding a match to this sound is with Hendrix's albums "Are you Experienced" and "Band of Gypseys", and The isley's "Go for your Guns". One other album I took to is the 1977 self-titled album "Shotgun", BUT sadly I haven't been able to find a download for it. Recommendations don't have to be limited to funk bands, just something that has the heat and the heaviness that those Funkadelic records have.

WEFUNK Radio : WEFUNK is a Hip Hop, Funk & Soul mix show broadcasting from Montreal

I haven't listened to it much lately they maybe got a bit more commercial but they used to play some heavy underground funk that can still be found in their archives

Highly rec

Check out Victor Wooten. He slaps like a beast, "victor's jam" on YouTube is a good example. Also check out Stone Jam by Slave, Mark Addams was a great slapper too.
