I first heard this record on a 45 I still have somewhere. I was watching a parade at a festival in a small town in Southern Ohio. IRRC, I wasn't even 10 years old at the time. One of the local radio stations had a float in the parade. The people on the float were tossing 45s into the crowd and I caught this one (pre-internet, computerized programming and even CDs, kids). It's great that the song is available online all these years later.

Can you guys recommend smooth, silky, buttery, schmaltzy, sugary R&B/Soul with rich, complex, unpredictable harmonies and melodies?

Welcome to the board, Andreas. Off the top of my head, I recommend Smokey Robinson's solo albums Where's There's Smoke and Warm Thoughts. I'll list other ones that come to mind later on.
